Cut & paste from Word into Note in Sources For

Post by aaj1945 » 07 Nov 2012 16:44

I wish to copy 2 paragraphs from an external Word file outside of FH5 into the Note field at the bottom of Sources for (in this case Baptism). The citation has been added but an explanation is required to clarify the situation.
I have copied the 2 paragraphs from the Word file and attempted to paste them into Note but the paste does not occur.
This is the first time I've tried this. What am I doing wrong?

The shortcut keys ctrl+C and ctrl+V do not always work in FH.
Have you tried right clicking in the note and choose Paste.

Works fine for me using Windows 7 SP1 and MS Office Word 2007 (.docx file) and FH V5.0.9.
Both right-click Paste and Ctrl+V are OK.

Exactly, what technique are you using?

Are there perhaps lots of tab or paragraph marks at the start of your selection?

Hi John & Tatewise,

Thanks for your swift replies.

I'm employing straight forward copy from Word & paste into FH5 using the mouse. My desktop operates on Windows XP. This technique works in all other contexts that I have come across and I should have expected it to work on FH5; however if there is a particular method that FH5 requires please advise.

Please be aware that as a senior citizen I am not a computer wizard and have only a limited grasp of their operation; so please keep it simple. Thanks.

There is no particular Copy & Paste method required by FH V5.
The standard techniques should all work OK.

Could you please perform some experiments.

1) Check what version of FH you have installed.
In FH use menubar Help > About Family Historian and tell us what Family Historian Version is listed near the top.
It should be something like 5.0.9.

2) Try to Paste into other FH Note or Text From Source fields.
When selected, these fields have an ellipsis [...] button on their right.
Click this button to open a popup window, then expand this window to full screen, and try to Paste there.

3) Open a blank Word document and type in a few words of simple text.
Try to Copy this text to the fields mentioned in 2) above.

Let us know how you get on.

Eureka!

Using the right click paste into into the note field worked last night. One learns something new every day.
Thanks.

Can I ask what you were trying to use before?

Was it Select & Drag & Drop?
i.e. Select the text in Word, then hold the left mouse button while dragging to the FH Note field, and release the mouse button.
