Delete any individuals with not related to root

Post by carrach » 24 Oct 2012 20:19

I am using Family Historian 5.0 - can anyone help with how I can delete a lot of individuals that are not linked to the root individual. I have copied a tree and want to get rid of anyone who does not have a relationship with the root individual but cant find a quick way of doing it.
Thanks

Can you make them all appear on a tree? If so the quickest way to delete a lot of individuals that I've found it to select them all on the diagram>click edit>delete. You will get a warning box asking if you want to delete them from the diagram or delete them permanently. You have to tick a box to say you understand they will go permanently. Tick Yes and they're gone!!

BE CAREFUL though!!!!!!!

Even easier, use View > Standard Queries > Search For Orphans.

BUT FIRST MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR DATA.

Your main family tree Individuals will almost certainly be in the largest Pool 1.
All the others will be in smaller but higher numbered Pools.
Select all the Individuals you want to delete in the first column.
Hit the Delete keyboard button and heed the warning.
PROCEED WITH CAUTION.

Another way is to use the Split Tree Helper, and to delete everyone Not found by the All Relatives query, see
http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id ... of_records

for some more ideas.

BEWARE the All Relatives Standard Query does not find all relatives connected through marriage.
It is NOT necessarily the same as all members of say Pool 1 as reported by Search For Orphans.

For example using the Family Historian Sample Project:

With Search For Orphans Query there are only two Pools:
Pool 1 is the main MUNRO family of 51 Individuals including spouses of spouses of blood relations.
e.g. Anthony Edward MUNRO married Susan Isabel DOWLING whose 2nd husband Nigel ANDERSON is included in Pool 1.
Pools 2 is an unrelated group of 7 individuals of CAMERON family relations.

With All Relatives Query there are many possible results:
e.g. Choose Anthony Edward MUNRO as the Starting Person and the Result Set is 42 Individuals including Susan Isabel DOWLING but NOT her 2nd husband Nigel ANDERSON.
Choose Susan Isabel DOWLING as the Starting Person and the Result Set is only 16 Individuals.
Choose Nigel ANDERSON as the Starting Person and the Result Set is only 12 Individuals.

A similar problem afflicts the All Relatives Diagram which is why there is Wish List entry 501 for an Entire Pool Diagram.

Thank you all for your help. In the end I have gone down the route of finding the family name in the list of individuals, opening them into an all relatives tree, and then deleting them from there. It does mean that I have to go through quite a lot of similar moves but it does avoid me deleting any marriages in error.
Thank you again
