Transferring media images

Post by TimS » 21 May 2012 17:44

I update my family file in FH5 on my desktop. It is in a project folder together with all media images as recommended. All the images are visible on screen.
How can I view the same file in FH5 on my laptop?
I have tried copying over the entire project folder via a memory stick, but on opening the file, all I get are empty squares with diagonal lines.
When I select media and open all media, the image records appear on the left but empty squares on the right pane and 'Unable to load object'.
Is there an easy answer or do I have to add all my media again manually?

On the original PC, if you look at the Tools>Work With External File links do all the images appear in the Media/ folder or do you see something like

C:UsersTimdocuments. . .

It may be just a case of remapping the media with in the media folder, if the long path matches the media folder for your project.

The advice in the following threads may be pertinent.
They were found by a Search for Relative Absolute Media.

linking photos
There are others that may help.

Jane, as they are updated, my file was labelled January, March and May 2012.
In the first two, the images are in the media/ folder, but for some unknown reason, the May images are in my C:UsersTimDocs etc folder.
How did this happen and can I reverse it?

The simplest way to sort them out is to create a new project from your existing project using the New Project option, selecting the gedcom from your current project and telling Family Historian to copy in attached media.

Once you have done this you can delete the old project and rename the new one to your preferred name.
