Letter Spacing on Reports in FH 5

Post by goodwin2 » 08 May 2012 06:21

I rarely have reason to put my data into any report format.  Occasionally I send a descendant outline or similar report to a relative or someone doing research in my line. So it is that I have just experimented with the various report formats to 'give them a look'. I have also compared what I see with previous reports that I 'believe' I created with FH 4.

What I find is that in ALL report formats using the installation settings, I get letter and number spacing that, unfortunately, I can't replicate here nor can I attach a copy since obviously they are NOT in the specified uploadable formats. One sample - typed in here to see:

'Augustus M. Sherwood, son of Tunis Sherwood  ( 1784-1849)  andAnna MCLALLEN  ( 1790-1864) , was born on 5 August 1812 in Covert, Seneca County, New York.' - and the end parenthesis is too close to the number which I can't show.

In order to get the correct spacing in any of the reports. I have to change all the font selections AWAY from Arial Unicode MS to a different font.

This is obviously time consuming to do the font change in all report formats and do the change line by line.

First, was/is there a selection somewhere that created the font/format situation.  Second, is there a 'one time' fix to all the report formats?  Third, haven't seen this comment anywhere here yet ????

Appreciate some easy? answers!!

Letter Spacing on Reports in FH 5

A good way to show an example would be to do a screen shot using the snipping tool built into windows (7) and save it as a jpg which can be uploaded.

Report files are in a standard text file format so you could do a search and replace on the font name using a text editor. Just remember to make a safe copy first.

Can you clarify where the problem manifests itself - in the Report on-screen in FH, in saved Word-Processor Document format on-screen, in saved PDF File format on-screen, or when actually printed?

In the Report Options on the Format tab, the default Installation Settings are mostly Times New Roman Font.
These can be established with one click of the Installation Settings button (not line by line), but has to be repeated once for each type of Report.
Individual headings & sections can have a Font chosen by using the Edit button.

On my PC, Arial Unicode MS Font is not even installed by default.
I suspect this setting was inherited from FH V4.

I can get something similar to your description, if I use Arial Narrow 8 pt, but it depends on the Window size and Zoom level.
The Zoom is adjusted top right, and only affects the Report as displayed on screen.
The saved/printed Report should always be OK.

Have just gone through all the report types again, chose - format - installation settings and, as Tatewise indicated, all turned up as mostly Times New Roman?????

So, no longer see weird spacing as before - good deal.

Can only chalk this up to early dementia on my part - or, perhaps, gremlins in the attic!!

Thanks for the input - wish all quirks were solved so easily.
