Upgrading to V5 via V4 from V3

Post by GeoffWalter » 03 Apr 2012 18:42

Hello Everyone.

I'm finally biting the bullet to upgrade from V3. I have a full version of V4 with the V5 upgrade CD.  My concern is that I do not lose my folder structure when creating a new project in V4 - I think the folder structure is okay but would appreciate confirmation from those with greater expertise and experience.

Currently I have a single folder in which sits my GEDCOM file together with five media folders.  These media folders have a mixture of sub-folders, sub-sub-folders, sub-sub-sub-folders and media files.  Not all media files are currently linked to the GEDCOM file but will be in due course once research is complete relating to a particular item of media.  Media files are primarily jpeg and DjVu but with a number doc, pdf, TIF and Bitmap files.

If my single folder becomes the new project folder will I retain my media folders/sub-folders/sub-sub-folders/sub-sub-sub-folders/media structure with all media files being transferred across?

If not what issues am I likely to encounter and what should I do before creating the new project folder to minimise such issues?

Thanks in advance.

Geoff

As your gedcom is above your media folders you should find when you copy it over the media folders will all be copied over in their structure to the the Project's media folder.

FH will only copy linked media, so using something like WinMerge to compare the directories to check for any files you have copied into your media folders, but not linked to your Project.
