Could anyone tell me how to delete icons that are inserted in a diagram. I have looked everywhere but cannot find an answer to this simple problem.

Deleting icons.
If you search the Help for icon the first two topics listed indicate that icons are one of the Box Features and that Diagram Options Dialog: Boxes Tab is where to start. You simply need to select Edit Features... on the Boxes tab and untick the Icon.
