FH stopped working

Post by jimrafferty » 30 Aug 2011 19:21

Hello

My version 4 doesn't open. I get the message 'Family Historian has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.'

Can I just point out a couple of things that may have caused this problem.

I also have Family Tree Maker installed'
I use Windows Vista.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Jim

This sounds like the dreaded Data Execution Prevention problem hat has been reported before.

If you enter Data Execution Prevention in the Search on the left you will find several threads that discuss how to sort it out.

It is also in the Family Historian FAQ at:
http://faq.family-historian.co.uk/index ... Prevention

If you are getting error code 2. Download and install service pack 3 from Microsoft.

“Error while unpacking program, code 2. Please report to author”

This has been caused by a Windows update, which affects a range of programs, including Microsoft's own Money program and Family Historian.

Assuming you have Vista installed and not Service Pack 2, you can fix this problem by installing service pack 2.

If you have a strong reason for not installing SP2, you may also be able to fix the issue by un-installing the following fixes from Microsoft

KB2507938
KB2533623
KB2555917

We have had several reports of this and all the users were running Vista with out SP2 which was released many months ago.

You can download SP2 from

My Family Historian 4.13 has developed a similar problem. Whereas it would start immediately it now takes forever. Once running it will run for approximately 30 seconds before switching off. No exception codes are listed. I have uninstalled it & reinstalled, downloaded updates etc. It has always performed perfectly untill today.

I am using it on a Windows 7 ultimate machine with stacks of memory & hard drive space.

Any suggestions please?

Regards

Will FH start OK on a smaller project such as Family Historian Sample Project by double clicking its GEDCOM .ged file?
If so, then what significant changes have been made to your project - added a lot of multimedia images?
Try using Tools > Preferences > General tab > Advanced button, and untick Auto-load Thumbnail Images When Opening Project.

Thank you tatewise for your quick reply.

FH starts fine with a smaller project but again will only run for 30 seconds or so before shutting down. I altered the settings as suggested but still the same.

I'm always adding data on a daily basis with mainly census details & images. My project has 4686 individuals, I never had any problems with the program prior to today. Nothing has been added to my computer & I've run anti virus tests & malware which say my machine is clean.

Regards

Phew, I am not alone. I too have experienced Family Historian closing down unexpectedly after 90 seconds to 2 minutes. The problem started today although I am not aware of any changes to my system.

I run Windows 7.

Strangely when I access my Project from my laptop via the Home Network everything works ok. The problem seems to be limited to my Desktop PC.

I have quite a large file, 20225 Individuals. Over the years I have deleted quite a lot so the last new record I wrote is 38685.

Can anyone help, I have spent hours this afternoon trying to resolve the problem.

Today for the first time I too have experienced the sudden closing down of FH 4.1.3. It starts up ok and runs for about half a minute before abruptly shutting down. This happens every time I open it. I have changed nothing on the PC - the anti-virus software is the same, the PC is running under Vista - nothing at all is different.

I have had exactly the same problem which also started today. Like everyone who has reported the same fault it just closed after approx 2 minutes. I run Windows 7 32 bit o/s with McAfee, supplied by by ISP.

Hi I too am having problems, all was fine about 5pm UK time, and then when I went back to my tree about 2 hours later it kept shutting down. Have spent the last hour searching for issues and found none.

Presumably this must be either an anti-virus update that has caused a problem or a Windows Update. Do you all use McAfee?

Hi everyone,

Good news and bad, I have this morning tried just disabling parts of McAfee which unfortunately didn't work. I then removed it completly and the problem has gone away. So it certainly seems that something in an update from them yesterday caused all our misery.

I have since downloaded a Free Trial from Kaspersky and that is working fine (fingers crossed it will stay that way). I must say I am finding this very annoying as it appears after 30 days I will need to purchase Kaspersky and as McAfee is included as part of my BT Broadband, more expense I shouldn't have to pay.

There are free alternatives you could use.
The main ones being Microsoft Security Essentials, Avast and AVG. There are probably others as well but they are the main free ones that are used.

Used System Restore to revert to 15/09/2011 settings, disabled future automatic windows updates and replaced Mcafee with an alternate protection system.

As a result Family Historian runs ok.

Would still love to know if the problem was with the Windows & Update or Mcafee.

I too have removed McAfee & replaced it with the free edition of AVG. All seems to be working fine again.

Fingers crossed

I wonder which bit of FH is upsetting McAfee?
I have just submitted fh.exe and all the .dll application extensions to http://www.virustotal.com which analyses them using over 40 anti-virus engines, and reported very little wrong and nothing from McAfee.
Perhaps Virus Total has not yet updated to latest McAfee settings.

I run a computer club and many members find AVG Free has recently become very resource hungry.
We recommend either Microsoft Security Essentials or Avast both free.

I find this typical of McAfee. A few years ago it suddenly started reporting that my old 'Gedcom Census' application had a virus so that various users began to distrust it. Of course McAfee didn't even have the good manners to reply when I emailed them about this. They don't care that this could totally destroy the reputation of your software. I seem to remember an update a year or two ago caused it to report that FH had a virus too.

I always recommend people not to use McAfee.

Oh *&^%%$$!!! My McAfee scanned and updated this morning and now I find I have the same problem as everyone else. We get McAfee from BT for all our computers and I'm reluctant to change things. Maybe I'll wait a day or so and see if things change.

Any other suggestions (apart from removing McAfee)???

I have had problems with McAfee in the past, and have only been using it recently because that is who BT have their deal with for virus protection. Interestingly though whilst buying a new PC a few weeks back, PC World at Basingstoke told me they no longer stock it due to various problems. Can't remember which one they tried to get me to buy though and I have just added Kaspersky as I know once the trial is over I can get it cheap as a mature student.

I know many people do use the free ones but after many years previously working in IT and having encountered many friends having used them and still getting viruses I have always chosen to use the paid ones.

Maybe I'll try one on my laptop and see what it is like.

I've emailed BT Netprotect Plus. I'm not holding my breath but I'll let you know if I get a reply.
