FH CD not running on friends computer

Post by jmpjack » 16 Jun 2011 23:17

I created a Family History CD for my friend with all her ancestors etc. It was created on Windows 7 but I also ran it through on my old Vista machine before giving it to her and it opened ok on that. However in both cases after clicking the blue FH icon Runstart.exe to run the disc I get a warning coming up “Active content can harm your computer or disclose personal information. Are you sure that you want to allow CDs to run active content on your computer?'. Having clicked yes the CD opened at home on both my computers

However whilst I got the Runstart.exe box on my friends Vista machine, nothing further happens i.e no warning as above and no error message. It appears that the CD tries to open the webbrowser and then the webbrowser ( Internet Explorer) just disappears.

I suspect that my friend may have a security setting stopping the CD running, but does anyone have any idea what it could be or how to get the CD to run properly please?

Any help would be useful
Thanks
Jackie

You could try bypassing the runstart routine open the data folder on the CD and double click on the _nameindex.html near the top of the list or scroll down until you find the index.html file and double click that.

The online advice via the link below may be the solution.
IE 8 crashes when opening an html file from an Autorun CD
http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums ... 6809f5db5f

It suggests that if IE is already running when the CD is inserted, then it loads OK.
Alternatively, it suggests turning off Protected Mode, which is done as follows:
Open IE and use Tools > Internet Options > Security tab.
Uncheck Enable Protected Mode (requires restarting Internet Explorer) towards bottom of window.
Click OK as necessary and close IE.

Thanks Jane and Tatewise,

Tatewise that link says exactly what is happening on her computer, Internet Explorer is just closing silently on opening without any error message as she is using Vista. I wlll get her to try the methods suggested. I do not have Protected mode enabled on my computer, but I bet she does!

Thanks again and I will let you know if this works so others can benefit in the future!
Cheers
Jackie
