Unable to create custom query

Post by astroman042000 » 13 Jan 2011 16:23

I'm trying to create a custom query - in my case to find 1891 Census records.
In the query window I click on New Custom Query in the drop down menu and enter the query name as - 1891 Census - select Query Type as Individual and click on the Create button.
Then I get an error message 'Unable to create query as '1891 Census'.'
The title of the query doesn't matter it doesn't want to play.
It's the first time I've tried to create a custom query - can anyone help please?

Unable to create custom query

The only think I can think of is for some reason you don't have the permissions to the folder for custom queries.

Are you able to create custom text schemes etc?

It's likely to be a windows problem, as I have not seen the problem previously, try running the program in Admin mode and see if you get the same problem.

Unable to create custom query

Thanks for the prompt reply.
I'm running Windows 7 and I tried your suggestion.
I cannot create a custom text scheme.  If I run the pre-installed queries they all run without problems.
On the basis that it might be a windows problem (I am the administrator) I had a look at the folder c:programme files/family historian/queries and the attributes were set to read only.  I removed the tick.  On the security tab the group or user name was Creator Owner - I changed this to Administrators which gives full access.
I'm making the assumption here that creating a Custom Query will put the result in the Query folder?
Anyway, none of the above worked - still the same error message.  Any other ideas please?

On windows 7 the files should be in the Programdata folder so you might want to check the permissions on that one.

Unable to create custom query

Post by astroman042000 » 17 Jan 2011 13:51

I've checked the permissions on the Programme Data files and they seem to be fine.  I haven't modified any folder permissions since installing Windows 7 some 6 months ago - I would have thought it would work without modifying anything.  I have however found the solution.
I also have a laptop with FH installed which I use for research and it also has Windows 7.
I tried creating a custom query using FH on the laptop and there were no problems.  Looking at the file structure there was a file containing the custom query which I assume had just been created - c:ProgramDataCalico PieFamily HistorianQueriesCustom
This was in addition to the QueriesStandard folder which was also there.
I went back to my main PC and manually created a Custom folder in the same place because there wasn't one.  I then opened FH and created a custom query without problems.  It was the absence of the folder which was the issue and something on my PC was stopping one being created.  Hopefully that will be of use if anyone hits this problem.

Unable to create custom query

Thanks for letting us know. It must have been a glitch during the install, but it's not one I have come across before.

Unable to create custom query

While you are familiar with the C:ProgramDataCalico PieFamily Historian folder structure, it would be wise to check that all the following folders have both a Custom and a Standard sub-folder.

Diagrams
Fact Types
Queries
Reports
Text Schemes

None of them had a custom folder so they have all been created manually. Thanks.
