Place of Marriage or Baptism

Post by ireneblackburn » 04 Jul 2010 09:02

I am sure this has been discussed before but I can not find the thread.

When recording a baptism or marriage, which field do you use for the name of the Church. If the place is Ashington, Northumberland, where do you include Holy Sepulchre (the name of the church). I need the address field to record the address they were living at, or should I create a separate residence event? Especially in the case of a marriage where there are 2 different addresses.

I want to be able to find all events that took place in a particular church so when I go to the Record Office to see the registers I can get copies of all relevant entries.

Over the years I have dithered over this and changed my mind more than once.

I put the name of the church as the address for the event that took place, and create separate residence events for the addresses of participants.

I put the Church in the Marriage Event address and create Residence Facts for the Two addresses for the couple.

So for example Marriage:
Place Kingsbury Episcopi, Somerset,England
Address St Martins Parish Church, Church Street

I agree -- the place is the city or town, and the Church goes into the address field for the event. I record addresses for the participants which might be associated with that event in separate residence events.

The same applies to burials and deaths (the name of the cemetery is in the address field, or the hospital where someone has died), draft registrations (the draft board's address goes into the address of the registration, while the person's address goes into a residence event), and so on.

I recently moved the other way - I switched all the churches / cemeteries into the PLACE fields. The reason being that I upload to TNG and can then tag the places in Google Earth so that you can zoom in to the church itself rather than the middle of the town or village.

Hi Brian

That is exactly why I started to dither about this.

The future version of Ancestral Sources that will deal with marriages will work on the basis that Jane describes. It will also assume that address is used for the church name (and road if applicable), whereas Place will be for the town, county, country, etc. (very much along the lines that Ancestral Sources deals with addresses and places for censuses).

Yes it will create the resident fact.

I would imagine it will (in some cases optionally) create:

Marriage (family) event (address/place/date of marriage)
residence for groom
residence for bride
occupation groom
occupation bride
birth groom
birth bride
Father of groom's occupation
Mother of groom's occupation
Father of bride's occupation
Mother of bride's occupation
Witnesses - not sure of best ways to deal with them yet

I've not really totally thought this through yet, when I get closer to the stage where I'm ready to work on this I'll ask for opinions.

Hi Nick
You have said that you are not sure yet as to the best way to deal with witnesses (to marriages).
Can I suggest that when entering a witness you can choose if the individual is already in FH (ie a relative etc)and create an event for them or the option to create a new individual as an associated person (to both bride and groom)and create the event for them.
I am really looking forward to having Ancestral Sources able to deal with events other than the census. You are obviously very busy and do this in your 'spare' time but it is greatly appreciated by all of us!
Good luck and best wishes.

I would support that approach too.

Can I second that!

I'd much rather continue this on the Ancestral Sources forum so I don't lose it in the future so if anyone wants to comment on this please start a new thread on there...

I've had a number of different methods of dealing with witnesses suggested.

e.g:

Add the 2 witnesses if they don't exist and add a custom event to them both

Add the 2 witnesses if they don't exist and add associated people links

Just record the 2 witnesses in the local note of the marriage event, etc.

I suppose the answer is going to be to give various options to keep everyone happy, but of course that ends up taking more time.

Cheers

Nick

Hmmm... can this site support a second wishlist?[question]

Once this moves to Ancestral Sources, I'll tell you which I prefer.

I've created a forum entry here for further discussion regarding Ancestral Sources and future support for marriages.
