How do I remove my mother's side of tree

Post by Forpm » 23 Jun 2010 20:33

I need to send a copy of the FH GED file to a cousin related to me on my father's side. Before I do this, I would like to remove all the data and multimedia records of relatives on my mother's side as these people will not be related to this cousin.

Please can someone talk me through how to do this?

THanks

If you have V4, use the export option and then select people related to your Mother, by using the select records and the all relatives query for her.

That's great. What about the linked photos? Do I have to sort through those manually or is there a way to create a separate folder of just the photos on my father's side?

I can't think of a complete way, but you could use a query to list all the media still linked and save to a text file and build at batch file to do the copy.

If using V4 with a project structure, it is possible to automate the copying of the required linked image files.  You need to have the exported GEDCOM file (e.g. father.ged) in the same .fh_data folder as your main GEDCOM file.  If you open father.ged in FH you should find that all the linked images appear as normal, but if they don't you should be able to fix the links using Tools...Work with External File Links.  You can then create a new project called e.g. father and get FH to copy the linked media files to somewhere in the new project folder.  You can then send that new project folder, which should contain father.ged and all the linked media files.

Thanks, Peter.

What's the best way of creating father.ged in the first place. I have tried various ways but seem to get rid of too many relatives.

I presume that your cousin also uses FH, because I'm not sure if other software would correctly handle the image linking used in FH.

To create father.ged, I would use the File... Import/Export> Export> GEDCOM File... command.  Then use the Select... option and Add using Query....  The standard query All Relatives with your father as starting person should produce the desired result, which by default would include your mother, but not her other relatives.  You could if necessary manually remove her from the list.
