MULTIMEDIA WITH CROSSES

Post by marilyn57 » 09 Jun 2010 21:57

Just changed from Windows ME to Windows 7 and noticed that some of my multimedia, one or two pictures, some censuses and all of 1911 censuses are just white boxes with a cross through. All censuses were done in Gedcom Census and later Ancestral Sources, but before changing to Windows 7 everything was okay.

They are not in the project folder either. I can find them by searching for them and then remapping each individually but is there an easier way to do this. Seems a long way round as there are so many and I am sure I did it a while ago when I had this problem, just cant recall how I did it. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

My guess would be they were not copied to the Project folder when you upgraded to a V4 project.

If they are all in a few folders, remember you can remap at the folder level so just remap at the folder level, otherwise you will need to move them over manually.

I just lost all my media - AGAIN.  Have no idea what happened except I stuck a few pictures in a different file folder.  They came up in FH but when I closed the program, I got all the Xs next time I started up.  After messing around A LOT and copying the Media file to several different file folders, I finally got them back.  Now I'm hoping that when I close and open the program again, they will still be there.

Next question - how can I CLEAR - or at least limit - the gedcom file tasks?  I now have 9 in the list and want to have ONLY the one that I would use if I needed to open the program by that method.  Most programs allow you to specify how many previous files you want to show.  Would prefer to be able to clear the list so it is not confusing.  I only really have one project but it has had to be renamed a couple of times and all those OLD things are still there.

Also, could someone do a step by step process of how to get your media files relocated so - JUST IN CASE - mine disappear again I won't have to spend so much time trying to get them back.

Thanks for insight and help.

Goodwin, what version of FH are you using?
If you are using V3 have you structured your media as per the suggestions in the Knowledge Base. FH only ever copies files in V4, so if your media is moving something else is moving it. Be aware that if you move the location of your GEDCOM file or your images on V3 you will break your media links.

The only way to change the number of recently used files is to edit the registry settings. A more drastic way might be to totally uninstall FH and reinstall, but I can't guarantree that removing FH will clear all the registry entries. It's up to you to decide if you want to go through the hassle of uninstalling and resintalling for the minor annoyance of having 'bogus' entries in your list of recently used (LRU) files. With only one project/gedcom it will always be first file in the list.

I'm using the latest version of FH, i.e. 4.1.3.  When I recently renamed my file I put it in a new directory but did not move the media file. In the previous post I indicated I had my media back - only partially true.  When I moved the media fle to the new location for some reason not all are there.  So there are still Xs - LOTS.  Can't seem to find the REAL media file so guess it is going to be a SLOW process.

Re clearing the gedcom file task - how does one edit the registry settings?  Sounds a bit more technical than I am but Jon seemed to say it was easier and faster????  I am reluctant to have to do a reinstall unless there is a REAL disaster that necessitates it.

Any advice as to whether to archive all old files - out of my documents perhaps - to avoid the confusion with renamed files, etc.?

Appreciate the help.  [frown]

'When I recently renamed my file I put it in a new directory but did not move the media file'

Why did you do this?

Please consider using a Project and then use the copy project option if you need to create a new one, this will copy your media as well

There are a couple of videos in the How To's explaining this.

I made a new directory to store backups for the renamed file [which actually is NOT a different project] - thought it was a good idea at the time.  I tend to save more backups than are really needed so guess I should just keep a couple of current ones.

Finally have ALL my media back in place and hopefully won't have the same problem again.  There are some 1600+ media files.

Tried to open the video 'how to' on projects but somehow it didn't open.  Have no idea why.

Guess I haven't fully gotten the picture re how to keep the project all together.  Will go into the help chapters and see what I find there.

Thanks for the input.

Looks like screentoaster is down at the moment. I will give it a few days to come back, otherwise it looks like I will need to redo all the How To's I did using it.
