If you are an advanced PC user you can use a Virtual Machine or similar to install the alternate version in.

I am glad I made the move, I like all the new functions and even, to my surprise, the Focus Window, but if you don't like the focus window you can switch back to the Records window on startup.

You might find the 'intros' for V4 in the How To's helpful.

The upgrade from v2 to v3 brought so many new features that it was an obvious upgrade but v3 to v4 isn't such a big change really in comparison, perhaps the equivalent of moving from XP to Windows 7. However, once you've used version 4 for a while, going back to using version 3 is a bit of a shock, it just feels so dated now. You get very used to the focus window and the configurable properties dialogues and miss them when they're not there.

Well obviously what I said implies that they are worth having even if beforehand it didn't feel like a 'must have' upgrade. Is it the £19 upgrade cost that's putting you off?

Not really, though I am on limited funds. It's just a case of 'am I upgrading for upgrading sake'. Done this with other programs only to realise that I don't use much of the 'New' facilities.

I am also generally reluctant to upgrade for the sake of it, but I'm very glad I moved up to V4. Apart from the Focus window, I particularly like that the Properties box can now be resized in both directions, and you can customize it to include any additional fields you like. Also, the new Fact Queries are extremely useful, along with dozens of new Functions. Even if you are not keen on writing queries, more and more of the queries downloadable from FHUG are now being written using the new Functions, and so cannot be used in older versions. The saving of diagrams and reports in PDF format (including as a single large page for big diagrams) is also most useful, especially for sending copies by email or on disk.

I was also reluctant to change to V4 but I did in the end and I'm happy [smile]. I don't use the focus window much though!

One of my 'projects' is a One Name study. The Gedcom contains a lot of unconnected families. With V3 I used to get frustrated that the list of names (many of which are the same name) in the records window did not seem to have much order about it. NOW, with V4, I have noticed all the Williams for eg (280 of them all with the same surname!)are in a logical order. Even those without a birth place noted are listed in order of assumed 'age'.Magic!!!
