Delay Starting V4

Post by AlanParry » 02 Jul 2009 10:48

When I start up V4 I get a blank screen with the eggtimer for exactly 30 minutes then FH starts up correctly. V3 worked fine for me. Have I installed something wrong?

Not heard of this before. Have you installed the V4.0.2 Patch?

Does this always happen?  Even after a reboot?  Which version of Windows are you using?  How much memory do you have?

Jane's suggestion of upgrading to 4.0.2 is a good one (click on 'About Family Historian on the Help menu to confirm which version you're on).  If you have a lot of pictures, when you are on 4.0.2 I would suggest that you click on the 'Advanced' button on the General tab of Preferences and try unticking 'Auto-load Thumbnail Images when Opening Project'.  Then close FH and re-open it and see if this improves things.

I've already installed the patch, I'm running Windows XP SP2, I have 1GB of memory. It happens every time (the PC has been on and off every day for the two week since I installed the software). I think it's only happened since I installed the patch. The strange thing is it 'hour glasses' for exactly 30 minutes each time then appears to work fine.

Can you tell if the processor or disks are busy, using the task manager?

Can you think there was any other software you might have installed around the same time as 4.0.2?

Process usage is 97% system idle, CPU usage is 2%, Fh.exe is taking 10,092K of memory but 0 CPU.

As far as I am aware I haven't installed anything else.

The odd thing is the 30 minutes delay, I've just tried it again and it's 30 minutes to the second. It doesn't matter whether I am loading my main project (2000 records + 1400 images) or a tiny project (10 record + 4 images), the 30 minute delay is the same.

Not heard of this at all, my only suggestion might be to un-install and re-install, see it that fixes it. Make sure you backup any custom diagrams/queries etc prior to uninstalling.

Simon will probably be back at some point and he may have some other ideas.
