Free Upgrade

Post by Guernman20 » 29 Apr 2009 17:21

I bought version 3 after Nov08 that qualifies for a free upgrade. Does anyone know how this upgrade will be processed.
I tried to do this through the existing v3 programme but it took me to the website to PAY for an upgrade.

From the front page of the family historian site,
If you are waiting for a pre-ordered boxed copy or upgrade CD, or if you are entitled to a free CD upgrade to version 4, please allow time for boxes and CDs to be delivered.

Customers who purchased a licence for the download version of version 3 since November 26th 2008, will be emailed a link for a free upgrade to version 4. For technical and logistical reasons, we regret that there will be a delay in sending out these emails. We hope to have all such emails sent out by May 15th. Customers in this situation are not recommended to download the free trial version of version 4, while waiting for their free upgrade

As a matter of interest, why the delay on the downloaded upgrade? Is it because FHs server can only handle a limited number of downloads?

My guess would be it's simply that there are a large number of tasks involved in the V4 release and only 24 hours in a day.

My free upgrade has arrived. Appears to have installed OK. Now I need to play and then I can praise/moan like everyone else. Never realised you had to be a computer programmer to trace your family tree.
I started in the old days, with paper and pencil, often locked in churches etc to do my transcribing. Just wish there was family history software that allowed you to enter those transcriptions and work out the family history later, instead of having to place everybody on my family tree and then entering the sources. Still seems a bit back to front to me.
Regards
Andrew

With FH you can use the Add menu or the Records Window to add Sources whether or not you have added any Individuals. You may even care to first add Repositories before adding whatever Sources they hold. FH is very flexible.[smile]

Thanks Peter, I appreciate that. So can I 'load' all the CMB from the registers of a particular parish and then allocate the indviduals to trees later?

Andrew,

I often do what you suggest - I had a set of ancestors in a small parish and over time I first added every individual I could then slowly grafted them into my main tree. I still have a few here and then floating in my file - FH doesn't care.

Anyone who bought a download copy of version 3 via our website, since november 26th 2008, was entitled to a free downloadable upgrade to version 4 when available.  I'm sorry for the delay with those upgrades.  The emails (including all instructions you need, a link for the download, and registration key details etc) finally went out on May 14th.
