Changing the type of a media object

Post by DrDBW » 22 Apr 2009 22:37

Is it possible to change the type of a media object, after it has been linked to?

If I have an image that I have linked to a source, then want to change it to a pdf, well, it just wont let you do it. You have to remove the link, change it, then link again.

Is there some way to make the change without having to remove any links?

You can change the file type and the file on the Records window or all tab for the multimedia.

You might want to consider if PDF is the way to go for images as they can not be displayed or used in reports.

Changing the type of a media object

Once you have viewed an image you can't change it's type via the property dialog (not even in the all tab) as FH brings up the message 'Can't change format. Object in use'. However you can change it's type/format in the record window at any point in time.

Another way is to not view the image, or alternatively close FH and re-open it and then change the type.

I considered this a bug and reported it in August 2007.
