If you are already reaching back to the last century through your grand parents or great grand parents then try freebmd - http://freebmd.rootsweb.com - which is an index to the birth, marriage and death certifcates and has some 76 million records at present, partially covering the period 1837 to about 1910. When you find on this site the GRO index reference of a certficate then order it from - http://www.col.statistics.gov.uk/ Certficates cost £7 and often give very important leads.

If you are already reaching back to before the general registration started in 1837 then try the IGI which is done by the Mormon church at http://www.familysearch.org (click on Search for Ancestors then click on International Genealogical Index). This last site also has the 1881 England and Wales Census which can be very useful.

If you are just starting out, you may find if worth working through the online guide at
http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/your_histo ... gy_1.shtml

This is a useful guide to getting started.

It also includes the golden rules.
