Family Historian crashes when adding photographs.

Post by Campbell » 17 Sep 2008 12:53

Hi

I seem to have developed a Bug in my Family Historian 3.1.2 Program when I try to install pictures from a folder. I follow the usual procedure I have used over the past two years as I have about 30 to 40 pictures in use:

Select the person's record.
Click on Insert> Pictures.
Look in: GEDCOM & Family Pictures Folder
Highlight my Family History Pictures folder and click on Open, and at that point  Family Historian crashes.

Everything else is working and other pictures still display in diagrams etc.
Things started to go wrong, I think, after I opened a Bitmap Image with Microsoft Paint to add a caption.

I have reinstalled FH 3 twice now from Disc [ Then installed the update to 3.1.2 ]. The latter time, in an attempt to work from fresh ground, removed my  'Family History Folder' from the  computer and replaced it with a back up copy made about a month prior to the problem. That still did not work nor did starting a new Picture Folder and adding pictures from a Store Disc.

Hope someone can help as I have exhausted all my own ideas.

Thanking you in anticipation.

Regards, Campbell.

Family Historian crashes when adding photographs.

Can you confirm you are only linking rather than embedding?

I think the first thing I would try would be to make a 'blank' GEDCOM file and try and attach the file which is causing you problems. That should show if the problem is your GEDCOM file or the picture.

Hi Jane

Thank you for your reply.

Yes, I can confirm that all my pictures are linked and not embedded and they are all 'jpeg'.

I will now experiment with the other part of your reply and let you know the outcome.

Family Historian crashes when adding photographs.

Hi Jane

Sadly no luck so far. I have listed two procedures I tried out in the hope it might shine some light on things.

Number 1 [As you suggested]
1] Opened a folder on the Desktop and labelled it 'FH Test Folder 1'
2] Opened Family Historian and created a empty file by clicking New on the File menu.
3] Saved this to the 'FH Test Folder 1' as a Gedcom file then dragged and dropped my Family History Pictures file into the same folder.
4] Clicked on Insert>Pictures. Dialogue Box opens. Highlighted the Picture file and clicked open and Family Historian crashed.

Number 2
1] Opened a folder on the Desktop and labelled it 'FH Test Folder 2'
2] Opened Family Historian and created a empty file by clicking New on the File menu.
3] From the Insert menu, clicked on New Individual and created two fictitious people.
4] Saved this to the 'FH Test Folder 2' as a Gedcom file.
5] Checked to see if a Standard Diagram would display. It did.
6] Opened a file folder in the 'FH Test Folder 2' and labelled it Pictures. I then did the usual Copy & Paste of two pictures taken from a Store Disc. [Taken in 2004 that should not be contaminated]
7] Clicked on the first person in the Records list to open the Dialogue Box. Clicked on Objects then opened the Multimedia Box linked to the first person.
8] Clicked on Insert>Pictures.[ 'FH Test Folder 2'] In the Dialogue Box that opens I stored link to picture file and inserted as new record linked to first person.
9] Highlighted the Picture file and clicked open and Family Historian crashed.

On rerunning the process again a box opened that stated Family Historian had encountered a problem and had to close.

Any ideas and thank you for your help so far.

Regards, Campbell

Family Historian crashes when adding photographs.

I'm sorry to hear you're having this problem.  Here are some thoughts:

>> Things started to go wrong, I think, after I opened a Bitmap Image with Microsoft Paint to add a caption. Documents' dialog box.  If you clicked on Insert > Document and got the same crash when you tried to insert a document, that would be very strong confirmation that the problem is either (2) or (4) (and almost certainly (4)).  However, if it doesn't crash, you can't conclude that that means that the component is out of it.

If you think the problem is (4), it's unfortunately not easy to fix - but if you email me at support@family-historian.co.uk I may be able to suggest some further things you could try.

Hi Simon

Thank you for your interest.

As it will take me some time to work my way through your list I will have to get back to you in due course.

I have the feeling it is going to be Option 4: Corrupt Microsoft component used in the Insert Picture dialogue box.

Thank you again.

Regards, Campbell.

Family Historian crashes when adding photographs.

I thought I would put in this concluding chapter to the FHUG so any interested party would know how it all ended.

Well I got a new computer, a Dell Inspiron 530 complete with Vista, as the old one finally gave up the ghost. Luckily I saw it coming and had all my files on memory sticks, I then moved all my files into the new one and believe it or not I still had much the same problem. Now it just stops responding. Whatever it was, it had to be lurking in there somewhere.

After a lot of moving of files I had to finally give up keeping my photographs in my Family History Folder. I had done it that way for about two years and then  the Family Historian Program just started to crashed when I tried to insert one.
However, on the plus side now, if I keep them in Windows Photo Gallery on this new computer they insert without a problem. All very strange.

I have no idea what caused the change or what it was that migrated to the new computer and I doubt if I ever will. Needles to say I had run all the spyware, trojan and  virus checkers but they had never turned up anything.

At least I can insert photographs again and get on with my family history but I am quite sure that what ever it was had nothing to do with the Family Historian Program itself.
