Big problems!!

Post by tracyjgiles » 07 Sep 2008 16:51

I have a rather complicated part of my tree that has gone totally wrong, so rather than messing around trying to put it right i deleted the gedcom file. Thinking that i just had to unzip the previously saved backup. Therefore getting rid of my mistakes and taking me back to where i was last night.

I now can't open the zipped file as widows tells me it is blocked.........it has instructions of how to unblock it, by going to the file from my computer, right clicking and going into properties.

From there there is supposed to be an unblock box to uncheck..........but it isnt there!!!!!Read only and hidden boxes are there but neither a checked.

Nothing is in advanced either!!!

Does this mean i now have to back track the last 2 months work and start again?????

Any suggestions.............PLEASE!

Tracy

Hi Tracy,

I've just tried opening a year old backup file, and it works fine.

I take it that you've extracted the ged file from the ZIP backup and put it in some temporary location? Then just double clicking on it should just open it in FH.

Try making a copy of the GED file, with a different name (keep the same extension), then opening it.

What version of Windows and FH do you have?

Is this the problem with the way FH makes ZIP files in an odd way (and led me to lose some work)?

You need to open from within FH as they won't unzip under windows without a tweak that I can't remember.

I think you do File -> Backup/Restore -> Restore and take it from there.

Tony,

See above - I just opened the zip file with WinZip and then dragged the ged file out to a temporary folder. Double clicking on it then opened it in FH. It looked ok, but I didn't check it it detail.

I wasn't aware of a problem with FH ZIP files - any background on this?

David.

if you search the forums you will find some references to the way FH makes zip files with an odd root (or something). It means that Vista (for example) can't open the ZIP file under explorer from memory.

i am using xp and version 3 fh

i have tried opening it in fh but it tells me the file extension is not recognised.

I am not that computer literate so this has become a big headache.

Hi Tony And David,

Thank you both for your answers.........
File -> Backup/Restore -> Restore worked

Thank you so much I was dreading not being able to access my zipped files.

Back to trying to work out this nightmare of a family!

The problem with Zip files in windows explorer was fixed in V3.1 so make sure you have the latest version.
