Moving Links

Post by HNyman » 23 Jul 2008 13:41

I have moved my multimedia records to a new directory and successfuly created new links. The 'Work with external links' display is showing the old links as incorrect (crossed). The actual old folder has been moved altogether. Can I remove the old subdirectory from showing in the external links display?

Why did you create new links, what you needed to do was simply use the tool to repair the links once you had moved the files.

Either just delete the 'broken' media records by adding them to a named list and using the option to delete all named list records, or just select them one at a time in the Multimedia Records window and press the delete key and confirm each delete.

Thanks so much for your reply. Sorry I am being rather stupid about this. I wanted to move the folder for my pictures.
I set up the new folder and copied the pictures to it. I tried to deal with the change by working with external file links and moving the links to the new folder. This worked insofar that the files were correctly linked. However the old folder still shows with all the links crossed. I guess I should have just moved the folder and moved the links?
The multimedia records window only shows the new folder with the records correctly linked.
I seem to have two methods available which would could enable me to unscramble everything and start over. I have a backup of FH data before the change and a system restore point setup before the changes. Do you think either would work?
Thanks again

In the work with external links,  click on the old folder, as shown (yours will have a black X,  click the move option and select the folder where the images now are and click OK,  this should fix any remaining links and the old folder should go away.

Thank you for your patience. My file structure was more complicated than I thought, and took a bit of sorting out! Basically the method you suggested finally worked and my system is cleaned up.[lol]
