Thanks to the link in the Newspapers Online Trial thread I have now come across a selection of articles relating to various relatives (mostly on my husband's side - my Ag labs don't seem to have made it to print).

I am looking for some advice as how best to link the images of these articles to the person/people concerned using FH.

Do I:

a) treat each article as a separate source and link the image to that - this would create quite a lot of sources - and then link the source to the people/person

b) just link the image to the person / people concerned and put the information about the newspaper in the image note

c) use any other method that anyone can suggest?

I just thought I would pick people brains before I started doing something which I may want to unpick.

I'd opt for the first suggestion, it is perfectly normal to have hundreds or thousands of sources, there isn't a limit.

I'd go with option 'a' as well

I am in the same boat -- and I was considering option (d): one source for the newspaper, with publication details in 'where within source' to show date and page number, etc.

Jan,

This was an option I had considered - but what do you about linking the images, if you have several cuttings from the same newspaper?

In Jan's option d you would link the image to each citation. Personally I find this a bit messy as rather than just linking an image to a single place (the source) you need to link it to every citation that refers to the article.

Another problem with option d is how, for example, you would get a list of all the individuals who relate to a particular article. By having all the articles in one big source you can't easily tell which citations relate to each article without examining the data in each.

Thanks, Nick,

I think you have expressed the misgivings that I was trying to put into words.

I'll go with a) as recommended by Nick & Tony.  It's what I was thinking of doing anyway.

You can also group all the sources together by making a repository for each newspaper.

For instance if I have a number of articles from the Idaho Times, I create a repository for it, storing the home page URL in the website field. I create a source for each article I use, naming it something like Idaho Times - 16Jun2008 (Jon Axtell). That way the sources can be kept together in alphabetical order with the date identifying each article, and the name helping identify the key people referenced. Each source gets the text from the article or a scan, with the publication info being the URL if a online article, or where I keep the physical copy (if I have one) if a scan.

Thanks, John

I hadn't thought of that.  It makes sense, as a lot of the articles come from the London or Edinburgh Gazette.
