Obsolete Names in File Drop Down Box

Post by canberra100 » 04 Dec 2007 16:05

Hello

Just a minor, but nevertheless irritating problem which I'm sure is easily remedied except I don't know the answer. I have two obsolete names amongst several in my file drop down box. I need to remove them but so far have been unsuccessful. Could someone help please.

Regards

I assume you mean the four files listed at the bottom of the File menu?

I wouldn't worry about their apperance on the menu too much. They're only there for quick access to commonly used files.

The easiest way for you to remove them is to open four different files. Make a copy of one of your current files - renamed to an obviously different name - if you haven't got four.

I don't get the impression you're an advanced computer user, but to really make the items disappear from the menu requires editing the Windows registry. I won't give you instructions on how to do it 'cause if you know you can do it, then I don't need to give you instructions, and if you haven't got a clue about what I'm talking about then you're safer off not knowing how to do it. Basically you need to edit the 'My ComputerHKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareCalico PieFamily HistorianRecent File List' key

As a complete aside, some applications (eg MS Office) get round this by letting you choose how many file to show in the 'recently used file list' which would let you trim the appearance of the names (though I imagine they may stay in the registry)

Thank you, yes I am aware of the registry and no I wouldn't want to go there. I have two new files I have yet to begin work on which I have named and included on the system. The offending items have now disappeared. I did try that previously but they kept coming back, now they seem to have gone for the moment.

Thanks again

This cropped up a few months back - see http://www.fhug.org.uk/cgi-bin/index.cg ... y&num=2453
for more details, but in short I would recommend CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com), a wonderful free product which can empty the 'most recently used' (MRU) list, which is what you need to do, as well as making a good job of cleaning up the registry and removing unnecessary files.  It's also really easy to use and is good for your PC!
