Changing Case en masse for Surnames

Post by pdennell » 21 Nov 2007 14:08

A previous software I used changed the surnames all to uppercase.  I, however, use lower case.  Does anyone know if there is there a way for me unify all the surnames into one case or the other without having to check every individual and do it manually [nearly 3,000 entries].
The screen displays the names correctly, I only see the difference when I open the property dialog box, I just want to tidy up my information.

There is an old utility on
http://www.rootsweb.com/~gumby/ged.html

For changing Surnames to lowercase or to uppercase, which might be worth a try on a COPY of your file.

Sorry Jane, went to the link you gave and the link to the software is dead.  It does state that it is for Windows 95, and I run XP so maybe that's why.
Thanks for trying

It might be possible with another utility, but I can not remember seeing one, I will keep my eyes out.

It's possible you could use a text editor to do a search and replace for each surname you have in your file, if you can't find one.

The website works (http://www.rootsweb.com/~gumby/ged.html), but it's the download link on the website that doesn't work - for any of the utilities.

I have done a small program which I believe will do this, PLEASE use with care and save to a new file and check the results carefully.

The program can be downloaded from
http://www.fhug.org.uk/programs/SurnameChanger.exe

To use

Click load file and select your file.
A list of all uppercase surnames found will be shown, with a suggested Lowercase version, this may be edited to your preference, this will allow surnames like deVere to be correctly cased.

Click on the Save File and enter a new name for your file and check the results.

Please note I just put this together quickly so it might have problems, but it worked on my files OK.
