Relationship to Root

Post by Rusty » 05 Jul 2007 08:40

Not sure if this is me or a glitch, I have myself as the root person and when I entered my husband and his parents the relationship came up correctly, however when I entered his sister she came up as 'husband's half sister', again when I entered some of his aunts, uncles and grandparents they all came up as 'husbands half aunt....' etc. The 'half' goes when I either change the root person or close and reopen the programme so it isn't a real problem just an inconvenience. Am I doing something wrong?

Not seeing this on mine, does either of your husbands parents have a second marriage? or other 'unusual' familys adoption or multiple family as child records?

Rusty - I haven't come across this one before but it sounds like a glitch.  Any chance you could send me your GEDCOM file with instructions on how to reproduce this?  If you're happy to do that, please email the file to support@family-historian.co.uk

Thanks.

Jane & Simon,

It's a very new file that I've just started with only a few names, all I'm doing is clicking in the 'add child/add parent' boxes and adding the name, so far there aren't any multiple marriages or step children. I've sent a copy of the file to Simon as he requested.

I've also occasionally noticed the exact same thing happening in the past, but as you say, it seems to be the initial display. Save and reload and it displays correctly.

Rusty - thank you for the file you sent. I had a play and initially I couldn't get it to happen. Then I had an idea. I tried deleting your husband's mother's record and his sister's record. Then I added a sister for your husband (as another child of his only recorded parent). She was then displayed as your husband's half-sister. If you then added your husband's mother (as parent of both him and his sister) and added more siblings, the new siblings were shown as full siblings and not as half-siblings (except that to get the existing sister to show as a full sister, you had to click on 'Refresh' on the Windows menu - or do anything else which would refresh the relationship descriptions).

Do you think this is what happened with you?

Obviously if at the time the sister was added, she only had one recorded parent in common with her brother, she could be his half-sister. But the moral I think is that F.H. should only treat people as half-siblings if they definitely are half-siblings, and not if they merely might be half-siblings.

Meanwhile, it is easy enough to workround. Just make sure you add both parents (you don't need to provide any details about either of them if you don't know anything about them) and all should be well.

Just a follow-up on this one. Rusty emailed me to say that she was still getting the problem even when both parents were recorded, and I too have been able to make this happen (eg. with 'half-aunts'. I believe I have now identified the problem - it should be fixed in the next version.

Thank you very much Simon, I was beginning to think that it was me - a bit like calling in the washing machine repair man only to find that the machine works perfectly [cry].

Thanks again

Margaret
