* GRO quarterly date ranges

Dear All,

Two related questions:

If a B/M/D is registered in a particular quarter (e.g. Apr-Jun 1907) the event may have actually taken place in a previous quarter (e.g. Jan-Mar 1907). How do other users of FH handle this? (This is especally a problem when it is the 1st Quarter of the year, as the event may have taken place in the previous year).

In my previous software, I made the situation explicit by entering e.g. 'Registered between Apr and Jun 1907'. FH has put double quotes around this text, and does not recognise it as a proper date. Fair enough, but is there an easy way of finding all these cases and changing them to Q1, Q2, etc.?

I use Q dates and a source of GRO index. To me this is enough to show that the date is an index date rather than an actual event date.

You could write a query for each of the events, using a condition of contains text searching for Registered.


If you are confident with a text editor you might be able to do a global search and replace. I would recommend an text editor like PSPAD rather than a Word Processing package like 'WORD'.

I think Jane has the important point (as I seem to find myself saying repeatedly)... The important thing is to record the source, so that you can always come back to it and make your own judgement about the reliability or accuracy of anything.

We record just the year on GRO index dates with a source citation to 'GRO Marriage Index' or whatever, and the full reference, e.g. 'Q1 1855, Kings Norton 6c/411' as the 'Where within source'. And of course, especially in Q1 it may be wrong, but at least that is clear in reports or whatever.

We started using quarter dates, but any other system reading your Gedcom tends to report them as 'between Jan 1855 and Mar 1855', which is just as misleading, and fairly ugly.
