I'm a bit puzzled by the way the programme of 'How Tos ' works. I have found that when I click onto the short cut I've created to run your most helpful programme (which I saved to my Family History directory), my dial up programme is started and a connection to FHUG is made. Is this because the actual programme is retained on FHUG and run from there? I have been having Broadband drop out problems caused by an intermittent BT line fault recently, which was supposed to have been cleared but it may have come back. I am trying to establish a starting point to persuade BT to send out an 'engineer' to investigate.

I suspect the Flash File was not saved when you saved the page.Is this because the actual programme is retained on FHUG and run from there?
I will be making some downloadable (exe) version of the How To's (hopefully tonight time permitting) which will be easier to save off for re-viewing

I have just converted the demos to .exe format as well which should make it easier to watch them off line

I would appreciate any feedback on this delivery method and the How To's in General.

Hi Jane. These offline demos are VERY useful, thank you.
The 'Entering data from a Birth Certificate' link results in an error 404 message from the Freeola site, maybe a mistype or something in the link. All the others work fine.
FHUG is one of the most helpful groups I've come across, I'd be lost without it!

Thanks Jane, Now I've got a lot more data stored I'm begining to appreciate these little 'how tos'.
I can now pursue BT again to convince them that it is not my firewall creating the problem. Computers !!! Who'd have one !!

On the broadband front, did you recently get upgraded to 8Mb, I got drop outs when they upgraded mine and when I spoke to my ISP they said, BT are pushing the link up and it then tunes its self down to the correct quality/speed which may take up to 10 days.

Hi Jane,
No, I've applied for 8Mb but I'm still only on 1.1Mb Which was the best they could do when I applied for 2Mb.At the moment it hasn't dropped out for a couple of hours, so I've got my fingers crossed. However I was coming back to you with another problem associated with the downloads in this thread. While the on line flash demos work ok., of the modified ones for offline, all except the modify columns one, stop part way through and I have to use the 'end programme' feature. I have re-downloaded them with the same result. Any ideas? I was still connected to the net but not to the FHUG site. I didn't think that that should cause the problem.

They don't need to be connected to the net anyway so I guess it got damaged on the upload/download or something.
Just tried it here downloaded it and it ran right through.
Try deleting the file before you download and clear your internet cache then try again.

There are lots of problems for lots of people with the new connections. I was upgraded about 5 weeks ago and still have connection problems after 21:00 most nights. I really do need to get something done about it but haven't found time yet. I think most isps are waiting for BT to do something. I find the www.adslguide.org.uk forums useful for information.

I have followed all your tips, checked my Java programme, my flash programme, cleared my disc, increased my internetfile capacity to max (it was on nearly minimum before) and my broadband has not dropped out once. I've downloaded and tried to run the files one by one. even the first into the list only ran about a third of the progress bar. But fhmodcolumns does work ok. I'm at the edge of my IT and PC knowledge now, other than throw the PC through the window.

This may be a little off line but at last my broadband dropout has been solved. Since I last posted here I hadnt' been able to stay connected for more than about 4to 41/2 minutes. The one thing not checked by Bt or anyone else (including me) was the voyager modem. It proved to be faulty. I'm now back to speed and will be able to pester you all again. It's nice to 'belong' again
Best wishes to all.

Sorry some of the downloaded ones have a problem, this is due to a bug in the software I use to create them. The online ones work fine but the exe ones freeze. I am awaiting a reply from the programs author, when I get back I will try and repackage them using a different method.

thats all right then - i thought it was my computer!

Still a bit off line. My personal saga with BT continues, despite being sent a voyager 210 replacement router (under warranty), Further problems have led to a diagnosis that the master telephone point (where the bt line enters the house) is now faulty and awaiting replacement. It has been an amusing few days trying to convince BT, once you can talk to a human being, that there is a fault on the bit of circuit between the normally hidden socket inside the box and the surface mounted, normally accessible socket. Apparently there is a small circuit board which can go faulty !!
[This how I can still get the broadband conection to work.]
I came on site to see if the modified 'How I Do It' programmes were ready for downloading, because it seems such a long time since my problems started.
Incidently I have also had a new mother board and CPU fitted to my PC again under warranty, fortunately.
I'm beginning to think that someone in 'Digital Heaven' is telling me to stick to model boats !!
Best wishes to all.
[confused]

Hi Jane,
I can see you've been very busy while I've been having a rest from F.H.. The new layout looks good.
Can you update me on the How To's situation. Are you still waitng for the info that you need to stop them from freezing part way through?
Best Wishes

I am still waiting on debug mode for a fix. I do have a work around, but at the moment am trying to juggle too many balls to look at it.
Once I get this new site software beded in and the SOG lecture out the way (9th Sept) I will try and get down to it.

Dear Jane,
I hope I haven't offended you, I did not intend to. I do realise that you volantarily run this site and that fact is very much appreciated, as I have learnt so much by suscribing to it. I've just been looking at a promotional CD that came with a newspaper, from Family Tree Maker and It did contain a quite good set of tutorials showing how to use the software. Could not Callico Pie do something similar? Needless to say knowing Family Historian as I do in my limited way still means that I think it is a superior programme to all the 'opposition'.

I did put a download package up for the How To's a week or so ago.
On the tutorial front, I suspect its a balance of time, so do people want tutorials or new functions?

I thought that there were tutorials on the disc to work through - so my vote is on functions. And if one is puzzled there are many helpful people here to answer, including the writer of the programme who visits.
I know that Jane not only runs this site voluntarily but also contributes to at least one other (non FH site - RG) in a major way, and maybe others, so I don't honestly know how she has time to work as well![grin]
