Ambiguous links

Post by TimM » 07 Apr 2006 19:12

Around 1770, two brothers (each married), living in the same parish, each had sons. The two sons (cousins) were given the same name. From the parish registers there is no real clear way to distinguish one from the other. One of them had a family, but the records don’t tell us which one. So there is some ambiguity as to which of these two lads was the ancestor of the family branch I’m researching.
This being the case, I may have to live with this ambiguity, but at least I know their grandfather is my ancestor either way.
What I would like to know is:
First. How can this be recorded in FH?
Second. Is there a way of showing this in a diagram so that it can be seen as a possible alternative link?
Third. Can you add to the wish list the ability of the diagram to show tentative/alternative links using a different line style? Also, likewise, a different line style for “un-natural” links, such as adopted, donated egg/sperm, etc.
Thanks
Tim

The third one is already on the wish list.

All versions of FH can do multiple parents simply use the records window or all tab to add an additional set of parents, via family as child

V3 can show multiple parents for a single person, and you could add notes to the boxes via an attribute or similar

Ok, I've set the child up with multiple parents. She was adopted by an uncle and aunt, so she appears twice in the diagram. So how do I show which are the natural parents whilst also showing her adopted ones?

Sorry, I've gone off on an adoption tack as opposed to the sons of two brothers, but the issue is still the same, how do you show this on a diagram?

Your should be able to add an expression to extract the relationship field from the family as child

When you have a person with multiple parents, they are shown twice on the diagram. I'm still trying to find a way of showing their relationship to each set of parents. I have managed to add the data reference %INDI.FAMC[2].PEDI% which adds 'Adopted' to both instances of the person. But this doesn't help with identifying which are the natural parents and which are the adopted parents.
Is this possible? and if so please detail the process.

Thanks
Tim

As I already mentioned before simply create a custom attribute to define any relationship 'comments' you need and add it to the text scheme.
