How do I find a relative that may be alive?

Post by wyerd » 27 Mar 2006 21:01

From the Ancestry.co.uk Birth index, I've found a relative that was born in 1937 in Sheffield. His mother died in 1988 and lived near Worksop. How do I go about tracking him down? As I live near Portsmouth, I don't plan on making a trip up there! I'd be very grateful on any hints/tips.

Thanks.

Services like 192.com provide access to the electoral role, or you could try the bt.com online phone book.

I tradce my natural/biological mother in 2003, using a UK Info CD but the 192.com site would probably do the same.
However, as people started to read the small print they have opted 'out' of inclusion on sites such as that. They are still, and have to be by law, included on the master electral roll, which should be available to study in archive centres or large libraries, unfortunately only for the area concerned.
What I am saying, in effect, is that even if the person isn't listed, doesn't mean that they have passed away, left the county - maybe just not registered!
I have just spent quite a considerable time going through the BMD index on 1837 online to trace my great uncle and searched the deaths (as I wasn't having a lot of luck with marriages!)from 1921, that last year I had any information about him, up to about 1960, when he would have been 80. I found his death in 1941 and the certificate ordered proved it was him.
I'll start backwards on more marriages. After that, don't know!!!!

Thanks for the tips. It's unfortunate that the surname is Cook!

I'm going through the marriage index at the moment. Hopefully I'll find something there.

Another good site Ive found for finding Living people is
http://www.tracesmart.co.uk/?page=peoplesearch.

It cost a minimum of 14.95 but for that It will tell you details of every David Lewis living in Milton Keynes (9)or Every David Lewis In Bucks (48)
