Although I have visited Genes Reunited, the only person I currently have in my family tree there is me. I would like to know what people think about privacy with Genes Reunited. If I upload with living relatives what protection is there? Do I need to strip everything out of the GEDCOM and just leave names and nothing else or is it perfectly safe to load dates and places for births and marriages of the living?

Personally I restrict information about living relatives to their surname and birth and marriage years. I only include them if needed to link parts of my tree I want to publish.
I use Genes Reunited in order to research further back rather than wider, so this approach suits me.

Privacy is a bit of an 'in' thing nowadays, especially with all the worries about identity fraud and so on. It is worrying, I grant you but this is the way I have dealt with it and it seems to work.
Using a program like Res Privita (or whatever it's called!) to get rid of dates & other information you don't want to show. There's lots of software out there that is all of use and, I'm not afraid to admit, I use in conjunction with FH to get the results and information that I want!
Convert your information to website format. Again, there are loads of programmes out there and I use quite a few, for different reasons. However, GedMill is particularly easy and will do wonders with a FH GEDCOM file with hardly any effort at all.
Next, if you haven't already got one, open up a free website. Admin Jane has seen some of my attempts! I have a few on the Christian Aid Surefish webspace, and Rootschat just recently. The former is purely for convenience rather than conviction; the latter is because I can! Jane's excellent site usung PHP is, sadly, not an option for me as my domain site with Demon will not accept PHP, but it is worth considering that method.
Almost there. Download a free FTP programme. I use CoreFTP Lite as it is free for commercial use as well as personal & educational. Use this to upload your privatised family history website, to your free webspace.
Finally, put the URL link to your 'chosen information' website, on the sites again of your choice, such as this one, and you have the ultimate information experience. You could even put a password on the index page.

If I remember rightly, it is a condition of entering information on the Genesreunited webite that you have sought the permision of anyone living to enter their details. To get around this I entered the information I wanted to go on there manually rather than uploading all my gedcom file or having to strip out parts of it. This was time comsuming of course but I was lucky enough to be able to spare the time.

One issue to be aware of when using Genes Reunited, is to be sure you wish to be reunited with everyone who may link into your names/tree!! I put just a few names on to test the water and was promply contacted by some names that sent alarm bells ringing and had to promptly remove the data. (Sorry if this sounds old fashioned or unchristian but its all too recent for olive branches) Typical Cornish family in my experience!!
