I have a problem on how to record a birth to unmarried parents. Ann Baxter registered the birth of her son William in 1842 and showed the father as Wiliam Kirkby. Her son took her surname Baxter, which shows on subsequent census. I can only assume that William Baxter did not know his father. When I print out a narrative report, it states that Ann married William etc, which I know is not correct. I have shown the status as 'Never married' and made an entry in the note to the effect that Ann registered the birth and William took her surname, but this information did not appear in the narrative report. I wish to show William Kirkby as the father as I have traced his ancestors back to 1665.
Any advice would be most appreciated.

If the narrative report states they married then this suggests you have a marriage event recorded for them? If so then delete that. If I have a couple who don't have a marriage recorded but have 'Never Married' selected I get a comment in the narrative that says 'At some point she had a relationship with Jo Bloggs'. If I add a blank marriage event for them (even if Never Married is selected) then it changes to 'She married Jo Bloggs'.
To see the note - it depends where you recorded it - presumably in the birth event? In the report options you'll need to tick (under the Main Tab): inc. Event/Attr notes which should then include your note.

Can you clarify what Family Events you have recorded for Ann Baxter and William Kirkby.
Make sure you do not have a Marriage Event on the Facts tab.
If I have no Family Events for a couple, and set Status: Never Married then the Individual Narrative Report says At some point he/she had a relationship with ....
For the Note to appear in the Narrative for the son, edit the Birth Event that contains the Note.
Edit the Sentence at the bottom (click on the box to see the template) and include {note} where you want it to appear.
This will NOT affect any other sentences and does not require all Notes to be included in the Narrative as with Nick's suggestion.

Thank you Nick and tatewise. I deleted the marriage entry in the facts tab and the narrative shows just what I wanted.
