Projects not Displayed in Project Window

Post by Johnyeates » 06 Oct 2012 18:02

All my projects are displayed in the Project Window on my Desktop Computer running Windows 7 Home Premium.

On my Netbook running Windows 7 Starter with SP1 all I get in the Project Window is the FH Sample Project.

All projects are in the same folder ie FH Projects and both machines are running FH V4.1.3.

I think that my other projects have never been displayed in the Netbook Project Folder, only the FH Sample Project.
Any Ideas please

Use Windows Explorer to look at the C:Users{username}DocumentsFamily Historian Projects folder,
(or wherever your Projects are stored.)

Can you see folders for your Projects and the Family Historian Sample Project?

In the Project Window you may need to alter the Location: which, on mine looks like:

The File Path is correct - see screen shot

Image

I have also taken a screen shot of the Project Window that shows the Project Path.

I cant see anything wrong, I wonder if it is a Windows 7 Starter problem.

The path C:UsersNetbook.. is different from usual Windows 7 accounts.
Which is C:Users{username}Documents...

If you click on C:UsersNetbookMy Family TreeFH Projects in the Project Window can you browse to another but similar path?

If you use Windows Explorer and double-click C:UsersNetbookMy Family TreeFH ProjectsJohn_Barbara_TreeJohn_Barbara_Tree.fh_proj what happens?

What is the path in Tools > Preferences > Startup > Default Startup File?

Projects not Displayed in Project Window

Post by Johnyeates » 06 Oct 2012 20:56

Tatewise,
Item 1 - The path used to be as you stated but no projects shown, problem as I saw it was that in the Project Window the path shown was C:UsersNetbookDocuments...., the My was omitted from the My Documents. So this evening I changed the path to try to cure it. No Joy

Item 2 - I can browse to the other projects, There is no other path with a similar name.

Item 3 - There is no file called ....John_Barbara_Tree.FH_Proj, there is one called ....John_Barbara_Tree.FH_data. There is a file called ....John_Barbara_Tree that is the FH Project File and starts FH and opens the project when double clicked.

Item 4 - The file path is C:UsersNetbookMy Family TreeFH ProjectsJohn_Barbara_TreeJohn_Barbara_Tree.fh_dataJohn_Barbara_Tree.ged

As far as I can see everything is correct, and is similar to the desktop computer.

Projects not Displayed in Project Window

It looks as though Windows is unhelpfully hiding the extension of some of your filenames. Every FH Project has to have a file with extension .fh_proj. To see this in Windows Explorer you may need to click on Organize > Folder and search options and then on the View tab, untick the check-box for Hide extensions for known file types:

Projects not Displayed in Project Window

Post by Johnyeates » 06 Oct 2012 23:00

Making the file extensions visible did not make any difference.
What I don't understand is why the FH Sample Project is displayed in the Project Window but my projects are not there.
All the projects are displayed on the Desktop Windows 7 Home Premium system.

It is not a big deal as I can open all projects from Windows Explorer but I cannot use the Project Window Controls.

I want to change a project name, I wasn't sure if changing all three sections in Windows Explorer would muck up FH in some way as it tends to have data stored all over the place.

Thanks for everybodys input. It must be a foible within the Windows 7 Stater System.

I think it is a feature of all versions of Windows 7 that the address initially shown in the address bar at the top of the Windows Explorer window is not the real address of the file or folder, e.g.:
Image
In order to see the real address, you need to click on the downward pointing black triangle at the right, as follows:
Image
It is this real address that needs to be set as the Location in the FH Project Window.

You are nearly correct Peter, but do not click on the downward pointing black triangle at the right (that simply lists recent folders), but click on the blank space just to its left to reveal its real path.

Projects not Displayed in Project Window

The path is displayed correctly.
I still cant figure out why the FH Sample Project is displayed but the other projects within the same folder are not displayed.
Has anyone else got the Windows 7 Starter OS, I know that it is a cut down system but I don't know what is missing.

I am clutching at straws now.

Try using File > Project Window > More Tasks > Browse for Project... to display the FH Project folder.
Are all your Project sub-folders listed along with the Family Historian Sample Project??

Also try File > Project Window > More Tasks > Project List > Refresh Project List.

The FH startup file is C:UsersNetbookMy Family TreeFH ProjectsJohn_Barbara_TreeJohn_Barbara_Tree.fh_dataJohn_Barbara_Tree.ged.
Does this Project actually startup when FH is opened?

Projects not Displayed in Project Window

Post by Johnyeates » 07 Oct 2012 22:55

Yes, all projects are in he same folder and re-fresh does not have any effect.
The folder configuration is the same as my Desktop.
I only really came across the problem as I wasn't able to utilise the Project Window function of Project Rename.
I remember that the Project Window wasn't working when I was in Australia for two months earlier in he year, so I think it must be related to either the Netbook or OS.
When I first had the Netbook IE wouldnt run properly, Nick spent an evening helping me sort it and we ended up installing Google Chrome instead which has been no problem, so there must be some differences either in hardware or software.
I always open the Default project from a Desktop Shortcut so not having a Project Window is not really a problem.
Thank everyone for all your advice, I think that I am going to live with it.

Projects not Displayed in Project Window

Is there a possibility that there are two copies of the Family Historian Sample Project, in two different folders on the netbook?

What happens if you simply open FH directly?

It should open your startup project C:UsersNetbookMy Family TreeFH ProjectsJohn_Barbara_TreeJohn_Barbara_Tree.fh_dataJohn_Barbara_Tree.ged.

If you use File > Project Window > More Tasks > Samples > Reset Sample Project do the folder & file dates change in the C:UsersNetbookMy Family TreeFH ProjectsFamily Historian Sample Project folder?

Projects not Displayed in Project Window

Post by Johnyeates » 08 Oct 2012 11:51

Peter & Tatewise,
As I was going through your tests and recording the result that the Sample Project Time/Date changed on Reset; I realised that the Netbook was still on Perth, Australia time.
So whilst I still had the Project Window open I reset the time zone to London, Dublin Lisbon etc all projects instantly appeared in the Project Window. They appeared as soon as I clicked OK for the time setting.

All is fine and dandy now, I have restarted the Netbook to check that it wasn't a fluke and all projects are displayed.

I then changed the Time Zone on the Desktop to Perth whilst I had the Project Window open and the projects disapeare. A window appeared saying that the programme had been modified by another application and would I like to reload it.
I reset the Time Zone to London etc and the projects re-appeared

Now, why would changing the Time Zone affect the programme?

Thanks again for all your time and help.

I meant to ask if you could replicate the symptoms in V5 that I have in V4.
