I want to add names to large group photos and undertand some software allows you to hover the mouse over the person and read the name.
I would welcome any advice on how to do this.

Chapter 4 of the manual for Family Historian version 4 explains how to Link to Faces; chapter 10 of the FH version 3 manual explains the same process for what was then called Add Frames. In version 4 you can then use the Multimedia Window to display the group photo and can click on each face to see the linked Individual record.

Picasa v3 can do this. You can get it free from Google.I want to add names to large group photos and understand some software allows you to hover the mouse over the person and read the name.

Just to add to Gerry's recommendation, I think the new face recognition facilities in Picasa are excellent. It automatically finds faces in pictures and tries to match them with other faces it has found, creating collections of faces. You can tell Picasa the name of the person and confirm/reject that each face is the person that Picasa thinks it is. It struggles with some young children, often matching to the wrong child, but with adults I've had it to be remarkably accurate. You can then easily find every picture with a particular person in them.
I should add that all the photos I've used have been taken with a digital camera and obviously fuzzy images or very distant pictures will probably not be accurately matched.
It also allows you to select where photos have been taken using google maps so that you can click on pins on the map and be shown all the photos taken in that location.

I agree totally with Nick and have been using Picasa and the on-line version, PicasaWeb, to share photos for a while. PicasaWeb has the added advantage of adding security to sharing so that only those who have an email from the owner of the album can view the photos.
I must admit though, there are times when having names on photos has a major advantage (for those who do not have access to a PC) and this is where Fototagger comes into it's own. It gives the facility of adding 'Tags' to a photo which can identify people, places or objects and 'Captions' which I use to give Titles. All these can be saved with the photo without being visible or you can use the option to save a 'Merged' version which shows the photo with all Tags & Captions on top.
Both of these programs are free and very good. I wish I'd been good enough to design them, but have nothing to gain but making life easier for others ![smile]
