Arthur Tom Thatcher
Hi i've just joined and have just bought FH5 and have a couple of brickwalls but i'll begin with My Great Grandfather Arthur Tom Thatcher b1877(unknown place) d1960 (Findon,Worthing,Sussex), married Mary Williamson Stewart in Ayr, Sotland 1901, his father Walter is on the marraige certificate as is his possible mother Louisa Thatcher(nee Elliot). Thats where it stops I can find no record of Walter or Louisa's marriage. Arthur Tom is elusive as I cannot find a birth certificate. Here's the added complication he appears on 'Family Search' as Arthur Whittford (or whiteford) Studdord Tom Thatcher https://www.familysearch.org/search/rec ... 3Athatcher~.
Giving him the correct children and birth dates. Help anyone please.[confused][confused]

What Census records have you checked, the 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911 census should help with a place of birth and the family group.
Also I think you will find the 'surnames' as Christian Names should help find possible links as in Scotland it's quite common to use maiden names.
Presumably, you have checked Scotland's people for the birth and marriage records along with the Census?

I have quickly searched FindMyPast.
FindMyPast confirms your Death record 1960 in Worthing, Sussex.
Does the Death Certificate contain any clues?
FindMyPast has a promising 1911 Census transcript and image:
Census 1911 Reference: RG14PN29466 RG78PN1710 RD542 SD1 ED4 SN14
Name Relation Cond/Yrs Sex Age Born Occupation Where born
THATCHER, Arthur Head Married M 34 1877 Steeple Chase Jocky London
THATCHER, Mary Wife Married 10 years F 34 1877 Scotland
+ six children Wilfred, Louise, Doras, Stewart, Herbert & Harry living in Sleegill, Richmond, Yorkshire
No other entries in earlier Census years seem to match, so maybe living in Scotland.
The only Birth that matches is: Q4 1878
THATCHER, Arthur Tom Stockbridge, Hants 2c 102

Hi, My Info is that He married Mary Wiliamson Stewart in Ayr in 1901 on the Scottish marraige certificate it gives his father as Walter and his mother as Louisa nee Elliott. He had his son Wilfred in Ayrshire and moved to Darlington Durham not long after and then to Richmond Yorkshire, from there to Lewes,Sussex where his last child was born and finally Findon, Sussex to his death, all racehorse linkages. I have seen the Stockbridge record before only the father is not named as Walter. I haven't as yet seen the death cert. Census comes out as London but no record can be found of him in any searches(Find my Past & Ancestry or FreeBMD)

It would certainly be useful to purchase the Death Certificate from the GRO at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates.
Presumably, the Marriage Certificate along with the 1911 Census and Death Certificate all confirm a birth year of 1877.
It should be possible to find him &/or his parents by searching the 1881, 1891, 1901 Census records, but some may be for Scotland, which are on http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, but not on FindMyPast or Ancestry or FreeCEN.
It would also be useful to find his parents marriage.
Other research sites are listed at Useful Research Web Sites.

I've checked the marraige cert which I have and his age is actually given as 26 and the cert is 23 Jan 1901 his father Walter is given as a Doctor of Medicine, his mother as Louisa nee Elliot.

FindmyPast does have transcriptions of Scottish Cesuses. but he doesn't show up in 1881, 1891 or 1901.
There are a few Thatchers in Scotland in each census but not many!
With the horse racing connection I wonder about Ireland?

Thanks for your interest Anne, On the 1911 census he gives his birthplace as London, so I would think the 1881 census should have him but the nearest I can get is A T Thatcher living in Shoreditch with an older brother called Walter, yet fathers & Mothers name different.

I have just found on the 1861 census a 'Whiteford A Stoddard' aged 1 grandson in Clapham. On BMD the A is for Arthur. Is there a slim chance he might have fathered Arthur and the name incorporated, just an idea.

If his father was a Doctor, he may be mentioned in directories, this would give you an idea of where the family was living.
You can look on Ancestry or http://www.historicaldirectories.org

At the risk of muddying the waters, I observe the following on the 1911 Census.
His name is spelt unusually as Aurther, including the signature.
The children's names Wilfred and Lousie are different from other references.
The Married Woman details were originally entered against the husband and crossed out.
The Birth Places are entered somewhat inconsistently using variously 'City' and 'County;Country' and 'Town;Country' and 'Town;County'.
Crucially, the signature starts M for Mary, but is crossed out.
So I wonder if Mary actually filled in the Census, and was not sure of Arthur's birthplace.
So perhaps he wasn't born in London, but in say Middlesex, or even Lambourn with well known horse connections.
