Icon help when printing

Post by loulou330 » 13 Jan 2013 15:04

Hi - I hope you can help me.

I have got icons on my diagrams and would like to know if I can 'turn them off' when I print off diagrams (especially for family members).

Can someone please tell me if this is possible.

Many thanks

There is no simple OFF switch for Icons in Diagrams.

You need to create a Custom Diagram without Icons as follows.

Open your desired Diagram, and use the Diagram Options > Boxes tab.
Select each Condition in turn that defines Icon features.
If it only defines Icons then click Delete Condition >>.
If it defines other features then use Edit Features and untick Icon.

Untick Save as default bottom left otherwise ALL your Diagrams will lose their Icons.

Click OK and all Icons should vanish.
If not, then you have not found all the Box Conditions that define Icons.

Now use Diagram > Save Diagram As > Custom Diagram Type and give it a memorable name such as No Icons.
If you need to display such a Diagram again use View > Custom Diagram Types and choose the memorable name.

Now you can Print these Icon-less Diagrams as usual.

Icon help when printing

Ah, thanks for that one Mike. I'm often having to explain the icons on diagrams I make for other people because it seemed such a faff to turn them off. Didn't think of a 'once and for all' solution like this.

I guess I thought Custom Diagrams were for saving one specific diagram and not a type of structure.

Thanks
Anne

Yes, Custom Diagram Types are for preserving Diagram Options customised settings that can be applied to any choice of tree members.
One big advantage is that these Custom Diagram Types are saved as files in the Calico Pie Program Data folder, and when it comes to migrating FH from PC to PC they are easily copied. They should also be included in your backup regime.

Whereas, the top six View > Standard Diagram Types, most of which also appear on the tool bar, are saved in the Windows Registry and much harder to migrate from PC to PC.

The Family Historian Charts are for saving a particular Diagram layout.
However, if new data is added that affects the Chart then it will be automatically updated.

The only way to permanently save a Diagram is to Save As an external file such as PDF of JPG.

An alternative approach is to keep the Icons and insert an explanatory key to the Icons into the Diagram.
Then everyone who views the Diagram, including you, is reminded what the Icons represent.
