FH freezing & slow.

Post by bruceernest » 20 Jan 2013 10:50

My FH (5.07) is running slowly and `freezing`. (Bit like the weather!) This started about a week ago for no known reason. When I open the programme and select an individual to open a chart, it shows a `shadow` of the project box on the chart for a few seconds and then clears but often freezes whilst working.

There is plenty of space in the computer memory etc. and this is the only programme behaving this way.
Any advice appreciated please.

It sounds like something else is conflicting or the thumbnail caching is causing a problem.

Try turning of the thumbnail caching

If that does not work, use the Windows Task manager to see if there is something else using lots of processor when FH is working.

Also review anything you have updated or refreshed in the last week (including anti virus or windows updates)

This happens to me sometimes. I have McAfee and some updates make it worse than others. If I turn off the continuous scanning all is fine.

Sadly my McAfee is free with my BTinternet and does not have the facility to remove FH from the scanning. Its not so much of a problem to make me find alternatives though!

There are a couple of free antivirus programs - Avast and AVG. I have used Avast for about 4 years as I had a problem with AVG which I used to use.

FH works without any problesm with Avast. I belive McAfee uses a lot of resorces.

We recommend both Avast! and Microsoft Security Essentials to the members of our Computer Club.
They are both free downloads with good reviews, easy to use, and low resources impact.
Simply Google Search for them to find their home page.

We stopped recommending 'AVG Free' when its resource usage went up and became nag-ware for buying its professional version and a PC Toolkit.

I stopped using AVG free when a friend got a virus, AVG free told her she had the virus, but you had to pay for the upgrade to pro to get rid of it.
I have been using Norton AV (NOT 360) , with no problems, but also use (on another laptop) the Free Microsoft one, again, with no problems.

Thanks to all who answered but no improvement!

Jane, I have switched the thumbnail caching off but no change.
Have also checked Task Manager but nothing else is running at the same time as FH. No change so far
When FH opens with the Individual Records it is fine but as soon as I select a name and open the relatives diagram the problem starts, shadow of project box, toolbar takes about 30/40 seconds to load then up to 60 seconds before I can move anything, then patchy slow.
I have been using Avast for several years and it works well with FH

On task manager how much processor is Family Historian using, on the Processes tab? Is the rest showing as belonging to system idle?

If you boot in safe mode does FH behave normally. If so it would be worth trying updated Graphics card drivers.

Also try using the Sample Project does that slow as well?

If you turn off duplicate checking do you get the slow down?

Checkout the Printer issues mentioned at Family Historian Stopped Working.

Also try upgrading to FH V5.0.9 that fixes some Multimedia Thumbnail problems, among others.
