Importing from another genealogy program? This is the place to ask. Questions about Exporting should go in the Exporting sub-forum of the General Usage forum.

Gedcoms and pictures

Post by TimS » 10 Jun 2013 21:52

I’m confused over Gedcoms and pictures and would appreciate advice.
My family file in another program (Legacy) contains pictures linked to my C://Users etc folder.
When I export this file as a Gedcom and open it in a FH project, all the pictures are there, linked to the same picture folder. But the Media folder in the FH Project folder is empty.
I understand that Gedcoms don’t contain pictures, but it appears that they do contain a link to pictures.
Is it possible to export a Gedcom without these links?
My aim is to open this non-link ‘clean’ Gedcom in FH and then link to a Media folder which I have previously prepared in FH with a previous update of my file.

Tim,
First of all may I suggest you post in the Forum appropriate to your version of FH, e.g. V5 Usage.
Then we can give advice appropriate to your FH Version.

The fact that the FH Project correctly links to your media files suggests that it should be possible to import, not only the GEDCOM file, but also the media files, into the FH Project, such the all the media files are within the Media folder.

In the File > Project Window click the Tips for New & Upgrading Users then Notes for Upgrading Users.
Under FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS check I have my own system for organising multimedia files. If I create a new project and let Family Historian copy my multimedia files into the new project folder, will it just copy them all into one subfolder?

There it explains that you simply have to move your GEDCOM file into the top folder that contains your Media folder hierarchy.
Then FH will recreate that same hierarchy within the Project Media folder.
Job done!

If that fails, then there are some FH V5 Plugins that are designed to locate and import external media files into your Project Media folder.

To answer your final question, FH V5 has File > Import/Export > Export > GEDCOM File in which you can set Multimedia Records to Exclude.
