I have a new computer installed with vista. Fam Hist all loaded - no problems.
I have tried to save a page from Ancestry to my chosen file Documents /Ancestry only to be told it was saved in a virtual file.
When I looked in Documents /Ancestry it was not there.
Yet when I tried to email it to a friend and browsed for the file It was there (in a virtual Folder?)and when I tried to attach it I got a message to say it was invalid.
I cannot see what to do next.
Please can anyone help?

This is very annoying! What you need to do is say Yes when Vista asks you whether you want to open the 'virtual' folder, and then copy the saved page to your family history folder - the one that FH recognises. Then delete it from the virtual folder.
If you're doing lots at once it's not quite so bad, because you can minimise the virtual folder and move all the new images across at once after you've downloaded the last one.

Thanks for your reply.
I am not trying to save the page to family Historian but to another file so that I can email it to a friend.
There is no size given to the virtual file which is perhaps why I get 'Invalid File' when trying to attach it to an email.
I have tried to copy it from the virtual file to the required file but cannot get that to work.
I wondered if the problem is to do with the 'protected Mode' on the security Settings for Vista ?

Welcome to the joys of Vista where the programmers at Microsoft think they know best and try and protect you from everything that might harm your computer even if you know what you are doing! [tongue]
Anyway, I haven't got Vista (and probably won't) but a quick google using 'vista ie virtual file folder problem' brought up these this link which I think might help you sort out your problem.

To move the file, right-click on it in the Virtual folder and select Copy, then open the folder where you want it to go, right-click on an empty space and click Paste.

Thank you Jon & Treefrog for your replies.
Jon - I have looked at the links, I am not computer literate enough to much sense ot it.
Treefrog - I have done as you suggested but cannot make it work. When I do paste /copy it tells me the file is not there. In Jon's link it does say that paste /copy is not available.
I am in a complete muddle now !! and not sure what to do next.

Have you tried saving the file to the Desktop instead?

I also use Vista and saved my files to a folder on another drive. You could try saving them to another directory outside of the C:/program files/whatever area.

It will not enable me to save the page/file to any other area except the virtual file.
Then it will not move to desktop or flash drive.
Is there anyone with vista who can give me detailed instructions ?
I suspect security has something to do with it.

That's weird...the way I told you works for me and I have Vista. Are you sure you're clicking on Copy not Make a Copy?

hello Treefrog
Make a copy is not an option when I right click.
On your vista do you have protected mode on ? (Bottom Rt on bottom toolbar)
How do you access the virtual file ?
I am wondering if I am looking at the correct file.
Sorry to be such a pain.

Windows Vista is trying to make sure that the folders within 'Program Files' are kept clean and only contain the files that are installed with the program. Any files edited or created by the programs are now meant to be kept separately from Program Files. This is a good thing as it helps to force a separation between programs and data. In particular as more and more of us use networks it is likely that a user won't have permissions to change files anywhere other than in their own user space, e.g. their documents.
If Vista just forced this new system on us it would mean that programs that were not written for Vista and insist on saving files to the Program Files (or similar areas) would no longer work. So what Vista does is fool these programs into thinking they are writing into a folder such as Program Files when actually they are not.
As I said this system is really a very good idea, its just a bit confusing when confronted with it. As more programs become Vista compliant this should crop up less and less.
Anyway here's my attempt to help:
I'm assuming you are on Ancestry and are perhaps saving a census image. I assume a 'Save As' dialogue window appears:
At the bottom of this dialogue it might have an option saying 'Hide Folders' or 'Browse Folders'. If it says Browse Folders then click it so that it says 'Hide Folders'
Now do you have a list of 'Favorite Links' on the left-hand side of the dialogue? If not then click on the Organise Button, choose Layout and select 'Navigation Pane': this should make a list (the navigation pane) appear on the left of the dialogue.
Click on 'Documents' in the navigation pane. This should ensure that you can see the folders in your Documents area. Select the appropriate folder, type in a file name to save the file as and click Save.
Hopefully you will now be able to use a similar method in your email program to find the file to send.
Hope this helps
Nick

We will crack this! Yes, I have 'protected mode' on. I've just gone through the procedure and written everything down:
In Ancestry when you have your census page (or whatever) click Save (on the right under the blue bar)
In Save Options, select Save to your computer and click OK
In Save As give it a name and click Save
You're asked: Do you want to open this folder? Click Yes.
A new window opens that says Windows > Temporary Internet Files > Virtualised >
Double click on the C > date line
Double click on Users > date
Double click on the line in the next window - mine says Jocelyn Rose but I'm guessing yours won't.
Double click on Documents
This brings up the contents of the virtualised folder
Right click on your document, then click on Copy, then open the destination folder, find a blank space and right-click, then click Paste. Voila!
It's Vista's fault that this post is so long.

Many thanks, Success at last !!
I followed your instructions Nick (which was what I was doing)got the navigation pane, clicked on documents, selected folder, typed filename, save but again got the virtual folder
So I followed Treefrog/Jocelyn's instructions from there and it worked.
Jocelyn - how on earth did you manage to discover what to do ?
Many thanks to everyone who took the time to help me it is much appreciated.

Ah OK, I'd forgotten about IE7's protected mode and I just assumed you meant User Access Control - oops. As you have protected mode on it won't let web applications have access to anything directly so creates virtual folders instead. I think what you could do to make life easier is add websites like Ancestry to your 'trusted sites' list (under Internet Explorer Options). Trusted sites by default still have fairly good security 'medium' rather than 'medium-high' but don't run in protected mode so you should be able to save files to your documents folder without the need for the virtual folders.
Vista amp; Ancestry
Nick - Ancestry can't be a 'trusted site' because it's not an https one.
Smol - lots of fiddling about, that's how.

You can add non-https sites to the zone simply by unticking the 'reserve server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone' option at the bottom of the screen where you add the sites.
Hope this helps

Thanks, Nick...however, after I'd done that I still had to go through the Virtualised rigmarole!

You would need to add the domain that the download comes from so this might be 'content.ancestry.co.uk' rather than http://www.ancestry.co.uk. Ancestry seems to not be available at the moment so I can't check.

just want to say thankyou for this thread and the advice on using trusted sites, disabling https etc, it works! I have been struggling with this problem ever since getting a new laptop with vista on last year, at last I can save census images in one step where ever I want without the hassle of trying to find them first, and copy/paste! [grin] should have looked on here first instead of wasting time trawling microsoft![confused]
