Can any recommend Mysql software

Post by redruth » 30 Jul 2006 17:17

Can anyone recommend software which will convert a GEDCOM file created on Family Historian into a MySQL database. There seem to be a number of alternative programs available on the net and I wondered if any users had their own favourite which has done the jobe for them. The software would have to be capable of dealing with cleaned files ie those from which sensitive data has been removed. I currently use a program called Res Privata to do this and then feed the cleaned GEDCOM into Gedmill which generates HTML pages. However I want to move away from having hundreds of individual HTML pages to upload which is the case with GEDMILL

I like phpgedview, which is very powerful and can use text files or mysql.

Can any recommend Mysql software

Post by mcws » 16 Aug 2006 22:33

I am interested in this question. I want to try and build an  database accessed over the web to index and then do searches on family letters in several different archives. My idea is to make an application that several people can use to index things in different archives all related to the same set of people, which I have in an existing FH gedcom file. I have just taught myself MSQL and PHP and I can tackle the letter index part and I was wondering how to get the basic family data out of my FH gedcom database and into mysql tables.

It certainly looks as phpgedview's mysql tables would provide the info I need. So ,

Is this the best route to go in view of what looks like a bit of a learning curve to get phpgedview installed and its databases accessible by the application which I will create?

Any alternatives I should consider before I take the plunge?

Is there any doumentation on a similar project, or should I just go and read the phpgedview documentation site?

I think I would as the phpgedview database is easier than writing a gedcom decoder yourself. I would think it should be quite easy to link up.

As a GNU project there is quite good commenting in the phpgedview is not bad.

Wow! The quick installation of phpgedview looked much worse than it actually was. The only instruction missing from the quick list was the need to create a database in myqsl, which I realised quite quickly and did with phpmyadmin.

I have only put it on the apache server on my own computer so far, but it is nice to be able to navigate a 6000 person gedcom! However, I have always thought that the phpgedview web pages look rather clunky. I need to experiment to see if I can fit more on the screen.

However my real purpose is to get the indi data and the fam data accessible to the letter archive index application which I plan to make. That will keep me busy.....

Thanks for giving me confidence to go ahead, and I am not sure whether I would have hit on the use of this programme had it not been for this thread, showing up in a search of the forum.

I have changed my approach to getting data from my gedcom into a mysql database.

When I tried using the phpgedview database tables I found that I would have to quite a bit of additional work, since although the phpgedview had tables for individuals and families, these are rather simple and most of the data remains stored in a text field as a copy of the gedcom entries for the individual or for the family. I would still have to do some rather fiddly gedcom decoding to get at the specific data I needed.

I have hit on a much better method which is to use FH queries to produce all the data for each mysql table which I require. Then I save the query result as  a .csv file, which I can easily import as data directly into the the mysql table which I have created to receive it.

Will probably be simpler if thats all you need to do. I haven't played with mysql much other than for the new wishlist. My phpgedview runs off the old text file method.

I've just started producing the FH queries to generate the tables for an Access database.. I'd be interested to know if you succeeded with your MySQL and what problems you encountered.
