FH overpriced download ?
I've been using FH2 for a number of years quite happily and thought it about time I upgraded as I have found a renewed interest the past few months.
Really pleased to see V3 being offered with a free upgrade to v4, but can't believe that it is actually more expensive to download via the publishers site than order a boxed cd version.
£37.54 to download
or from the FH site links:
£37.45 from S&N
£36.75 from TWR
£36.90 from My History
(all prices incl of p&p)
How can this be the more expensive method of product delivery ? I cant think of any other software where a bare download version is more expensive than a boxed cd version ?

Remember most of the Box sellers are actually selling a good bit below RRP, it's up to them how much they charge surely?

It is the entirely standard practice to be able to get software (and most other products) cheaper from resellers than via the manufacturer. Otherwise there wouldn't be much point in the resellers stocking it.

I agree to a point, but I just feel a download version should retail cheaper than a boxed edition, be it from a reseller or a high street store. And I find it a bit bizarre that the resellers advertised on the site are cheaper, it sort of makes me wonder why they even have a download option on there at all.
I'm not having a go at the product or its author as I've pretty well made up my mind its probably the best product suited to my needs.
And with Nicks excellent gedcom census bolt-on I cant find anything that comes close.

I suspect the download option is mainly for international customers as up to quite recently purchasing in much of the rest of the world has required purchasing the box version from UK reseller with international postage added.

Surely if the retailers have knowledge of an update they will want to resell their current stock (assumimg they hold it) so they will want to sell V3 asap, as boxes could become almost unsellable after the announcement of a new version, though Calico Pie has indicated that for those who bought after a certain date there will be a free upgrade (and elsewhere I commented, but it was not posted, that if a retailer had told a customer that they would have a free update and the customer bought before Simon's date, I think it up customer to take it up with retailer and get him to supply that free upgrade, not Calico Pie).
As for downloaders - yes international users but also with the increasing number of folk having computers without any cd drive, the download may be the only way they can get the programme onto the computer (my internal cd drive has died and many may not have external drives before anyone points out the obvious - LOL).

Try buying just about anything from Adobe online!

Had a nice reply from Simon.
Gone for the retail box version with the free upgrade to v4.
Got to admit the user interface looks somewhat dated but for sheer ease of use and versatility it beats the competition I think.
