FH and Ancestral Sources Reviewed

Having been a member of the Family History Society of Cheshire (FHSC) for ~15 years it was really pleasing to see a couple of reviews of Family Historian and Ancestral Sources in the March 2012 issue of their 'Cheshire Ancestor' Journal in the 'Net That Serf' computer section.

Peter Deakin (a fellow Warringtonian!) has given an excellent review of Family Historian and mentions this user group in passing. He comments on 'additional software, such as the little freeware program by Nick Walker called Ancestral Sources which is a very straightforward way of entering Census data for a family group'. His conclusion is that he 'would recommend any FHSC member looking to improve upon ther current family tree program to take a serious look at (Family Historian)'

Don Muir of Congleton has also given a glowing report of Family Historian, saying 'Family Historian does almost everything superbly well, with a huge range or options for diagrams, reports, automatic web page generation, and more. I was really pleased to see a lengthy description of Ancestral Sources with links to the FHUG website and where to download it.

The editor of the 'Net That Serf' computing section, Geoff Johnson, has said that having listened to Peter Deakin talking about Family Historian at a Computer Club meeeting he also decided to migrate to Family Historian.

Thank you Peter, Don and Geoff for the reviews and I really hope that more of your readers will be encouraged to try out Family Historian and Ancestral Sources over the coming months.

My previous utility 'Gedcom Census' was reviewed in both 'Your Family Tree' magazine and (briefly) in 'Family Tree Magazine' a few years ago but this is the first printed review of Ancestral Sources I've seen so it was a nice surprise to see two reviews in as many pages!

And both programs are well worth the praise.

Nick,

Ancestral Source is the best 'user add on' program I've ever run across. Don't know what I'd do without it.

Of course I love Family Historian as well!

Amen to these well-deserved positive comments!

Family Historian is a splendid genealogy programme, and Ancestral Sources a brilliant tool for using in conjunction with it.

I agree with Bill - I don't know what id do without it either.

Thank you so much Nick, for creating and developing Ancestral Sources; Very much looking forward to version 3; any news on when it will be released?

Graham

Hear Hear!!

Probably not the first person to think of this, but could AS become a V5+ plug-in .... ?? Of course, I'm creating Nick a maintenance headache, with the need to retain a stand-alone version as well, for compatibility with V1-4.

There will be a Plugin to launch AS from FH V5 in any of its four different edit modes, and with the selected Project and Individual in FH already selected in AS.
Will that do?

No it couldn't practically become a plug-in. It is a very big program and FH is restricted to only using the Lua programming language which is a scripting language with only a sub-set of the facilities that a full application really requires. I'm not saying that it couldn't be done but it would take a very long time to do - it would be a complete rewrite.

However, there will be a plug-in to make it easy to run Ancestral Sources from Family Historian so that practically there would be little difference between that and using a full plug-in anyway, except the slight delay waiting for it to load in your file.
