Gary, your test highlights my 'rant' about inconsistency.
{%SOUR.~NM-MAIN_AUTHOR: ... %} allows any qualifier defined in the Name Formats help.
{Main_Author: ... } only allows :REVERSE, :GIVEN & :SURNAME as defined in the Source Template Formats help.
{%SOUR.~NM-MAIN_AUTHOR:GIVEN_ALL%} is semantically identical to {Main_Author:GIVEN} and both display everything except the surname.
{%SOUR.~NM-MAIN_AUTHOR:GIVEN%} is the first non-surname word unless a 'name used' value is defined so is very different to {Main_Author:GIVEN}.
If CP do make them consistent then it will break existing templates unless some workaround is provided.

I believe we are in "vehement" agreement, Mike.
By the way; my template is working fine, now.
So; the original question has been addressed.
