Is your file stored on some sort of cloud storage?

I used to get the problem when my project files were on Google Drive (I now use dropbox)

Google locks your files whilst it is updating the files in the cloud

No I've given up on Google Drive and just back up to a portable drive and whatever FH chooses to save to.

You say you back up to portable drive, but is your project also on that drive, or your main computer drive?
If it's on the portable drive, it is possible it has gone to sleep temporarily, and wakes up when a save event happens.

Remember, FH doing it's autosave, or you saving by pressing 'Save' on the toolbar, is very different to Backup, which occurs when you are prompted to do so, on exit from the program.
