Short Title for Source in Automatic Source Citation Pane?

Post by AdrianBruce » 05 Jul 2023 21:19

This actually isn't that important but I've got it into my head that I was once able to alter it but now can't find any such option.

See the Automatic Source Citation Pane below:

The item labelled Source, containing "Miss Barclay Bruce...", appears to be the (Full) Title of the Source Record in question. I would much prefer that to be the Short Title and have this vague idea that there is/was a setting to enable that choice. But I can't find it. It actually doesn't matter much since I personally find the Source Record using the Select button and I have my source records set to show the Short Title. The Source item in the Automatic Source Citation Pane is therefore no more than confirmation - useful if I'm coming back to a previously existing prepared citation.

So - is it possible to change Source in the Automatic Source Citation Pane to show Short Title, or has it been like that since ....? (and I have this feeling someone's going to tell me it's been like that since v6 :( )

I would LOVE to have it be the short title. I tend to click into the field and start typing to use "autosearch" and I really want it to be the short title rather than the full title.

I would really love this part of FH to be improved and a bit more user friendly with standard keyboard shortcuts... the selection of a source in the ACS pane relies on one typing the first few (correct) letters of its source title (as opposed to any letters that may appear in it, or acting more like a search box - although I know that one can select 'more matches' to see the entire source list). But that leads to my second issue... using the arrows to move/select sources from the source title field 'blanks' the field instead of moving between entries! This means I almost always have to take my hands off the keyboard and use the mouse when using the ACS pane. A better approach would be for the backspace/delete key to 'blank' the field and for the arrow keys to be used to select a source up/down the list presented.

I have a dim and distant memory of this coming up once during beta testing but I can't remember how long ago, or which version. At some point CP had stopped the Short Title showing in the 'Sources for...' pane (in whichever version was under test), some of us raised concerns and it was restored. I think I then noticed that it wasn't showing in the ASC pane and CP gave an explanation. I don't use ASC myself so the explanation didn't really sink in, but I think it was something to do with dragging and dropping source title from a web page into that pane (something I am certainly never going to do!) and the fact that FH needs to be able to check to see if you already have a source with that exact title. Does that make any sense? Possibly not, so you'd better ask CP!
