EXPORT GEDCOM FILE plugin GEDCOM date

Post by Kingy » 11 Jun 2023 09:12

Sorry to hijack this thread but saves starting a new one.

I notice that when you create a new export it just overwrites the older version, but the file date stamp stays the same, which did confuse me the first time as I thought it hadn't done it.

I wonder if it might help to add the date to the filename if that is possible, so it keeps the older versions, but makes it clear which file is the latest?

Just a thought.

Paul, I have started a new topic for this as it is a completely unrelated new issue.

I presume you are referring to the date time shown by Windows File Explorer against the .ged file in the Export folder.

I cannot reproduce your symptoms. The Created Date and Modified Date are always the date & time the plugin is run.

Please confirm you are using plugin Version 5.5 and provide more details.

Just to confirm that I don't get those symptoms either- both Date Modified and Date Created show as the new date/time that the file was produced. I'm using Windows 11 and Gedcom Export Plugin 5.2.3.

It may be that Windows File Explorer isn't refreshing. Try pressing F5 to refresh the list of files and see if the date modified changes then.

Adrian, Export Gedcom File plugin Version 5.2.3 is an old prototype version and the latest is V5.5 in the Plugin Store.
It does not change the way Dates are handled but just an older version.

Mike
Sorry for delay in responding, I have been away on holiday.

Yes I am taking about the Windows file explorer view.

This is as it is before I do a download today. I have checked I am running the latest version of the plugin and FH is up to date.

As I run the Plugin you will see that the old file for ANC drops to the bottom and becomes a 0Kb file with the same date stamp.
Capture 2.JPG
Capture 2.JPG (22.78 KiB) Viewed 1093 times
After the plugin runs successfully, the file is populated with a size again but with the same date stamp.

This is the same for other types of export MYH / FMP / ZPG.

To possibly answer my own issue, I am using Google Drive as my Cloud, and I had an issue last year that I raised with the media folders in AS not being in alphabetical order, and everyone else said theirs was fine and I remember now we put that down to a quirk of Google Drive. So I wonder if I have found another quirk? Especially as others don't have the issue.

Hope this make sense and it is good to know the possible cause in case anyone else has an issue.

Regards
Paul

It would seem to be a Google Drive quirk.

Right-click the Master ANC UTF8 Gedcom File and choose Properties.
What are the three Dates: Created, Modified, Accessed?

As an experiment, change the plugin Export folder to a folder that is not in Google Drive. What happens to the Date?

Well, that gets stranger and stranger.

I've just double-checked the plugin script and it deletes the Export GEDCOM file before writing the new export.
That was added to Export Gedcom File Version 5.0 a year ago and is still present in Version 5.5.
I recall that somebody reported what you are reporting so I added the delete file command.

Are you absolutely sure you are running the plugin V5.5?

If you are then I can only assume Google Drive is so slow at actually deleting the file that writing to the file with the same name is applied to the file before it gets deleted.

The only other option is to change your File Explorer columns from Date to Date modified.

Would creating the export using a temporary name and renaming at the end work?

Yes - running 5.5

Yes could do, but I am aware now so not a big issue for me.

Thanks for looking.

As a test I just repeated the exercise of doing an export twice a few minutes apart changing the folder to Dropbox and then my PC Desktop and the outcome was the same as using Google Drive as above, I see the file size go to 0 Kb and then fill up again with the same Created date but a new Updated date.

I am running windows 10 fully up to date.

That is very unusual. As you can see, nobody else has that problem. I am also running a fully up-to-date Windows 10.

The only other things I can suggest are to re-install FH V7 and Restart your PC (NOT Shutdown & reboot but Restart) which bypasses the Windows Quickstart feature and rebuilds your Windows Profile.

Mike,

Just a wild guess, but is it possible that something is preventing the existing export file from being deleted by the plugin so that when the new one is created it just overwrites the existing one and the create date is not getting updated?

I guess it could be some privilege setting with that effect but it applies to all the folders Paul tried.

Paul, presumably you can manually delete those exported GEDCOM files.

Paul, have you tried the FH re-install and PC Restart that I suggested?
