* Searching for couples

Hi,

I am new to FH7. I think I need to create a custom query of the family type.

What I would like to do is search for particular couples: "John and Ann", "William and Elizabeth", that sort of thing. Initially, I'd just like to list matching couples - once I've got the hang of it I will add limiting dates, etc. to the search. At the moment, however, I can't work out how to begin (apart from it being a custom family query!).

I'd like to be able to use the query for any pair of first names, so these need to be "parameters" (is that right?) that I am prompted for when I run it.

Can anyone please help me with the syntax of the basic query, please?

Attached is a query that I use it just currently takes first names of both partners. It should get you started.

Welcome to the FHUG Ian.

The Query posted by Valkrider is an Individual type of Query and works well, but only for the 1st partnership of each person.

It does show how to enter Parameters for the Names and how to select FIRST names and SURNAMES.

However, your approach of using a Family type of Query is better because it will search all couples.
Use the following Data References for the husband and wife names:
%FAM.HUSB>NAME:FIRST%
%FAM.HUSB>NAME:SURNAME%
%FAM.WIFE>NAME:FIRST%
%FAM.WIFE>NAME:SURNAME%

Do you need to cater for any same-sex partnerships?

BTW: In the Query Columns tab have you explored the Fields pane on the left?
That lets you compose Data References interactively.
But first, in the box below that pane click the small black triangle and in the drop-list tick Show Both in Box.
Now in the Fields pane click the [+] next to Husband, then next to Name, and finally click FIRST.
That should show the same Data Reference in the box as I've given you above and can be added to the Columns.
