Problems moving to a new computer

Post by Michael508 » 03 Mar 2023 16:21

I am moving FH7.0.18 from an old computer using Win10 to a new one using Win11; as I had a lot of other files to move I asked someone [ an expert] to help so I do not really know what went on.
I now have seven projects showing in my project window most of which i do not need or want ;as far as i can ascertain my Michael & Barbara Family is correct and all there and working properly.
I tried to delete the copy of the sample family but it went through the motions but then declined to delete it

I have attached various screen shots take during the process.

I still have FH on my old computer so it seems to me that deleting and reinstalling on the new computer is the best way forward has any one a better way around the problem.
What will be the best way to remove it so that any files causing the problem are also removed.

Thanks for any help
Michael

The Project Window is actually showing two types of data.
  1. Those without (Folder: .... ) with Last Updated dates in 2022 or 2023 are genuine Projects.
  2. Those with (Folder: .... ) and Last Updated 01/01/1971 00:00 indicate rogue files inside the named folder.
You should be able to delete the genuine Family Historian Sample Project with date 27/02/2023.
The rogue - Copy in the same folder will also get deleted.
The deletion dialogue will warn that there are two GEDCOM in the Project but you can ignore that.
Also, take care to answer all the prompts carefully.

The Family Historian Sample Project can be recreated later.

Before going any further open your Michael & Barbara family genuine Project and use File > Backup/Restore > Full Backup.
For the other rogue files inside that Project folder, you must use Windows File Explorer.
So navigate to C:\Users\micha\OneDrive\Documents\Family Historian Projects\Michael & Barbara family\
Delete any files that have a filename starting with the same name as the rogue Projects:
Michael & Barbara family-Michael-PC
Michael & Barbara family - Copy
Michael & Barbara family copy Nov 2020 - Copy
Although that last one may be inside the Michael & Barbara family copy Nov 2020 folder.

Actually, you might find lots of duplicate files ending with -Michael-PC or - COPY that need deleting.
They are all aberrations of OneDrive synchronisation problems between your old and new PC.
You may find similar duplications on the other PC too.

Let me know how that goes and we can consider some further migration issues.

BTW: You should have shown the 'expert' the migration guide in the FHUG Knowledge Base.

Regarding screenshots, it is easier if you just attach the image file rather than a Word document.
See FHUG Knowledge Base Forum Usage Tips Attachments and Taking Screenshots.

Thanks for that information.
I now just have my project in the project window and I have been through files in Windows file explorer and deleted all I could find that said copy.
I no longer have a sample project but I do not use it very but would be good if I can restore it easily.
I was going to attach a screen shot but having read all the instructions I cannot see how to get it into the attachments without first putting it into a another file . I have tried with snipping tool which I use frequently and normally allows me to paste, but not here what am I doing wrong.
Many thanks for all your help

With the sniping tool, use the Save option to save the screenshot into a file, then attach that JPG/PNG file.

To recreate the Family Historian Sample Project use More Tasks > Samples > Reset Sample Project.

I am back where I was 10 days ago
I thought I had removed all the copies but after going into the project a number of times without any problems I found it all back again, with the difference being the date on the sample project, and when I tried to remove the sample project the message attached came up.
I have not tried removing any of the other copies, what is the best way forward ?

The error message states that there is a sync pending, so that’s why you can’t delete that folder.

Do you use OneDrive or DropBox?

Michael, the symptons, cause and solution are exactly as discussed and explained 10 days ago.

There appears to be a recurring problem with syncing the OneDrive files that causes the -Michael-PC and - Copy duplicate files to be created.
As long as that OneDrive syncing problem continues this scenario will keep recurring.

I have turned one drive off for the time being.
Is drop box less clunky than one drive.

Personally, I don't find OneDrive 'clunky' at all. It is in use all the time syncing my desktop with my laptop.
I wonder if something is affecting your Internet connection to cause these issues.
How do you connect? Is it via WiFi or Ethernet cable? Is it a high-speed reliable connection?

Please post a screenshot of some Project folders and files in the OneDrive folder to show the OneDrive icons on each file.

In your OneDrive Settings is File On-Demand set to On or Off?
Click the OneDrive cloud icon in the Notification area, open the cog Settings, and in Sync and Backup click Advanced settings where you will find Files On-Demand.

I agree with Mike Tate

I use Dropbox, OneDrive and Box on my PC and laptop without issue. One is wired, one is wireless.
My FH data is on OneDrive

I usually find OneDrive very reliable, except for the problem I reported at Unexpected conflicted copy in OneDrive (21004), which is probably unrelated.

I use OneDrive all the time across multiple computers and don't have any problems with it. Having it actually built into the operating system and using the 'files on demand' feature makes it brilliantly convenient. It is also really good value for money. I only have to pay about £40 a year to get 1TB of storage each for 6 people in my family with the added bonus of getting MS Office too (I always get the Office 365 Family Licence from Amazon during Black Friday).

Having seen all that feedback Michael, it suggests the problem lies somewhere in your PC or network set-up.
It is possible that something is faulty in the filing system, disk drive, network adapter, WiFi, router, phone line, etc...

Thank you all for your comments and support for the time being it is remaining turned off.
I will come back to it when I understand its potential a bit better just getting overloaded and mentally slow with age.
