Sources - confusion reigns!

Post by rlparsons » 15 Jan 2023 12:24

I am not getting on very well with Sources! What seemed previously (I've not done much with FH for a while) to be a straightforward process seems to be no longer so.
Specifically, I am trying to update a relative's record with his wartime service. I now have details in a letter from the MOD of his service (and death). I have scanned the letter to my computer and saved it as a file outside FH. Then back in FH I later select him from the Records window and enter a new fact "Occupation" under the Facts tab in the Property Box. I now wish to add the original letter as a source using the scanned letter. However, I am unable to create a Source from this point as nothing seems to bring up the source fields, which I am sure I have previously been able to do! Clicking the Source Icon, just switches on/off a blank yellow section at the bottom.
Am I missing something very silly, please?
I've attached a screen print of where I'm up to - as I say "confused"

You need to expand the vertical size of the Property Box by dragging its window boundary down (similar to most windows).
Do you see the central row of dots just above the yellow bar? Drag that up to expand the yellow Sources For pane.
That will reveal a toolbar of icons across the bottom of the yellow Sources For or Citation List pane.
See the Help page The Citation List Pane and please take in all the advice.

BTW: You may find it more convenient to have a separate floating Sources For or Citation List pane.
See Tools > Preferences > Property Box > Preferred Position for Citation List Pane > Open in New Window.

Many thanks, Mike. I'd missed the "gripper bars" bit! As I thought, it was a "silly me" moment with which I'm becoming more familiar as the years go by! And I hadn't read the guide carefully enough, anyway.
I'd tried adjusting the property box boundary but all it did was expand the blank yellow section, not the whole section. A bit illogical (and unusual) in my mind but still, I am but one ...

I have exactly the same problem. I have tried dragging the bottom of the property box downwards to make it longer as Mike suggested but no matter how far I stretch the box I cannot see anything for adding sources, nor can I see anything yellow in the property box. Everything in the property box is either black, white or grey.

I am using the latest version of FH, downloaded today, on a MacBook running the latest version of Parallels for running Widows applications.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks,

Roy

I have just discovered that the yellow area is on the right if I dock the property box. (It used to be underneath). All the sources appear when it is docked but if I make the property box float the sources pane still appears on the right but it is far too narrow. If I try to stretch it then the whole property box gets stretched in width but the yellow pane remains the same size so I cannot see the sources properly.

What am I doing wrong?

Roy

To make the yellow source/citation pane wider when it is on the right, drag the row of dots to the left:

If you want the pane to be below the Property box, use Tools > Preferences > Property Box and set the Preferred Position for Citation List Pane to be at the bottom of the box when it is docked and/or when it is floating.

Thanks, Lorna,

I'm just about to go out but will study your reply when I get back.

Thanks again Lorna,

I followed your advice and everything is working normally now. It took me a while to find the dots indicating the grab bar or whatever it is called. Even though I have my eyesight checked annually and I do not need glasses or contact lenses for reading (or for driving) the dots looked to me as if they were camouflaged, like grey spots on a grey background. Perhaps they show up better on other computers than they do on my 7 year old Mac laptop!

Regards,

Roy
