Re: Testing Ancestral Sources v7.6.12 (February 2023)

I've updated the first post in this thread to reflect the new v7.6.12 beta. When I started this testing thread in early January I'd planned on just a few small changes to go into a minor update, but the scope of this has expanded a lot since then! I've added probably the most significant new feature in today's update. AS can now display a descendant tree for the selected individual as an alternative way of selecting people to add to an entry. It also has a useful feature to allow multiple people to be added to a census entry quickly by ticking them off in the tree.

New Features in v7.6.12 (Beta Test)
  • There is now a new 'Tree View' mode which can be activated when viewing an individual that has children which displays a descendant tree for the chosen person. Individuals can be selected from that tree rather than using the separate list boxes on the right side of the screen. When in census mode, check boxes are displayed next to the people in the tree and multiple people can be ticked and added to the census entry with the click of a button. There is a new setting on the options screen that can be used to choose where on the main screen the Tree View panel will be displayed.
  • If the optional Windows setting to allow file names to be treated as case sensitive (see 7.6.11 update) is being used on the folder that stores log files, Ancestral Sources will now handle the log file names correctly. Thanks to Kev Canning for reporting this problem.
The 64 bit version is available to test here: Ancestral Sources v7.6.12 64 Bit
The 32 bit version is available to test here: Ancestral Sources v7.6.12 32 Bit

You may get warnings about the download not being commonly downloaded and you may need to confirm you definitely want to install it. Based on previous experience this should eventually stop happening once this new version of AS gets more downloads.

What a brilliant job adding the tree feature to select the family individuals, working very well for me.

The tree display is a great idea. It meets a need that I didn't know I had.

Just come across a minor issue. I'm adding a new household to the 1939 Register where I already have the image as I have recorded another household on the same page. I'm therefore using Link existing image already in the file to add the image to the new source. With the option Only show images with relevant titles or file paths ticked it is not showing me any 1939 register images, only census images.

The existing media records have titles Register 1939 RG101/... with the keyword Census. I don't change the file names so they all start TNA_R39_.... The folder for all of them is Media\Register\1939\.

Unticking Only show images with relevant titles or file paths and filtering for 1939 I can select the correct media record.

Really like the tree feature!

Nick,

Love the new tree view. This really makes selecting individuals for the census easy.

Thanks!

I agree - it's fantastic! One question, though - is there a way to include the spouse in the tree so they don't have to be selected separately? Not a huge deal - just curious :)

Thanks again for such a wonderful addition to AS.

Teresa :)

No, unfortunately the tree control I'm using doesn't allow for separate selectable items in a single node of the tree.

Having said it was working fine, on the next entry I tried, I got a blank where the tree should be:

No worries - just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything. It's cool to be able to choose all relevant offspring along with one parent!

Thanks :)

Like Teresa, I now sometimes see a blank where the tree should appear. It happens after using the tree when recording data from one census and then switching to a different census year but selecting the same person as the tree root. If a different person is selected the tree displays correctly.

Hi Nick,
I had an unhandled exception issue entering a Baptism. Image and text below refer. I tried again and it worked OK.

I think the issue was that I tried to paste an image, setting the name by typing it in - but a file with that name already existed in the destination folder. (Users EH!!!). I deleted that image and all worked OK.

Thanks David, I've taken a note of the error details and will hopefully fix this in the next test version.

Cheers

Thanks for the reports of issues with v7.6.12 - I've now released version 7.6.13 and updated the first post in this thread to reflect this.

I was really pleased to get so many positive comments about the new Tree View I introduced in v7.6.12. I've made some changes to that and in particular when using the tree view in Census mode, you can now also tick/check spouses mentioned in the tree too (using a bit of a work-around because it isn't possible to have multiple check-boxes for a single tree node). Something I forget to mention previously is that right-clicking an individual in the tree brings up options to add additional children, spouse, etc.

Thank you all for your continued support, positive comments and helpful suggestions and error reports.

Nick

New Features in v7.6.13 (Beta Test)
  • The Tree View will now show a Spouse button if an individual selected in the tree has a spouse recorded. Clicking this button will display the spouses and allow them to be selected or ticked if a census entry is being made.
  • The context menu that is displayed when right-clicking on a Tree View individual now includes the Change Name option as well as the add parent/spouse/sibling/child options that were already available.
  • I fixed a problem with the Tree View where it appeared blank if the same individual was selected after saving a source. Thanks to Lorna Craig and others for reporting this.
  • I fixed a problem with the Tree View where it didn't resize correctly if docked in the top or bottom left panels and the form was resized.
  • Changed the names of the title templates as displayed on the Options screen based on suggestions from Colin McDonald.
  • Richard Hyland reported a strange error message related to the image viewer. I don't know what caused this but have added some code so the error message shouldn't show again.
  • An error could occur when saving a pasted image into a folder that already contained a file with the same specified name. The usual code to add a number on the end of the file name in these circumstances wasn't working correctly. This is now fixed - thanks to David Cooper for reporting this.
The 64 bit version is available to test here: Ancestral Sources v7.6.13 64 Bit
The 32 bit version is available to test here: Ancestral Sources v7.6.13 32 Bit

You may get warnings about the download not being commonly downloaded and you may need to confirm you definitely want to install it. Based on previous experience this should eventually stop happening once this new version of AS gets more downloads.

Thanks, Nick, it works a treat!!! I'm home on a Snow Day (in Canada) - it's so fast now to add a full household in the Census.

Thanks to everyone who helped with the testing, made suggestions and reported errors. As always I am grateful for the support you all give to me. I've now released Ancestral Sources v7.7 to include the changes made during this testing process. I did also make a couple of minor changes since the last beta so I'd recommend getting v7.7 if you're currently using 7.6.x.

Thanks again
