Superfluous citations (revisited)

Post by Peter Collier » 26 Feb 2023 02:24

Mike,

Many years ago you created a plugin that supressed superfluous citations in reports. This was discussed in the thread Exclude citations from reports unless assessed as Primary (13496).

Since upgrading a while back to V7 I have recreated most of my sources to take advantage of the templated sources feature. I will therefore now need to go back through my project and add the "exclude from reports" note that the plugin required to all of the relevant citations of those recreated sources. Before I spend what would probably be a lot of time doing that, however, I thought it might be a good idea to check if the plugin will actually work with v7 in the first place.

Then again, perhaps a better question might be: is the plugin still necessary, or can the same result now be achieved with some built-in v7 feature? I haven't seen anything, but I also know the program has a habit of hiding a few neat tricks where I never think to look.

I am not aware of any new features in FH V7 that govern which Source Citations are included in Reports.

The plugin still does exactly what it did before.

However, the Report Sources section no longer includes Source Notes, so the entries saying One or more Source Citations excluded from Report do not appear.

I'm not sure what you mean by that Mike. The Source Notes are not included by default, but in the Report Options, Sources tab, there are options to Append from Source Record (or Append from Citation) the Text from Source and/or Notes.

Lorna, in this context (please read the original 2016 posting) we are talking about the Source Note %...SOUR2% that can be linked directly to Facts, Names, etc. NOT the Source record or Citation-specific Note sub-field %...NOTE2%. I do know all about the Reports Options > Sources tab settings thank you.

OK fair enough, that's why I said "I'm not sure what you mean", because your statement, as written, is somewhat misleading to say the least!
