Importing from another genealogy program? This is the place to ask. Questions about Exporting should go in the Exporting sub-forum of the General Usage forum.

TMG import media photos identified as jpeg

Post by Linda Reinfeld » 01 Feb 2023 02:13

I am importing from TMG, direct import. I have chosen to keep my media files outside of FH. Everything works fine, the links are fine. The only problem is when I look at the media tab in the records window, the format column identifies most (but not all) of my .jpg photos as jpeg. The photos are OK, they remain .jpg. But it looks like they are identified incorrectly in FH. I have no idea if this will impact something in the future....

JPGs and JPEGs are the same file format. JPG and JPEG both stand for Joint Photographic Experts Group and are both raster image file types. The only reason JPG is three characters long as opposed to four is that early versions of Windows required a three-letter extension for file names.

Welcome to the bu**er's muddle of GEDCOM media file formats!

Some background - the "standard" name of the format is "jpeg", defined by the IANA, an industry standardization body. Unfortunately, Microsoft have historically abbreviated this to "jpg", as their early operating systems could not handle file extensions beyond three characters.

GEDCOM 5.5 defines the approved format option as "jpeg". GEDCOM 5.5.1 changed this to "jpg", and GEDCOM 7 reverted back to the industry standard, namely "jpeg".

FH7 claims to be GEDCOM 5.5.1 compliant, but uses the GEDCOM 5.5/7 version of "jpeg" in its media file options. :?

None of this would matter particularly if FH was consistent in what it does, but there is a long-standing bug whereby it can switch between format descriptions, apparently at random. I reported this to CP years ago back in the days of FH6, but they have never got around to fixing it.

The only thing it seems to affect is sorting in the Records Window, where the "jpg" and "jpeg" are listed separately. It's untidy, so the way I get around it is from time to time open the GEDCOM file in a text editor, and change all the instances of 2 FORM jpg to 2 FORM jpeg. A very simple plugin could do the same within FH, but that also updates the Changed stamp, which you may not want for this type of editorial correction.

This is slightly different to my original case, as it is changing the format on import, so I suggest you report it to CP as a bug. You probably won't get any more than the usual "referred to developers", but at least it will remind them that the issue hasn't gone away.

There is a similar issue regarding tif and tiff.
Regarding Linda's last point about any future impact, I don't believe the alternative Formats have any significant difference.

Thanks for the responses.

I use GedSite for my online web creation. It will not accept .jpeg format. Thank goodness I keep my media outside FH and Mike's Export GedCom File program doesn't change the file format so all is well now.

I shall report to Calico Pie as a bug. I have about 8,000 photos, all of which are .jpg. About 300 are identified in FH as .jpeg. It looks strange on the media tab.

Sorry - I have spent the past 30 mins trying to find out how to report a bug.

I found a thread with Mike's advice:
See how_to:about#problem_reporting|> Problem Reporting.
But following that didn't tell me exactly how to.....

A search on 'How to report a bug' did not return any results.

TIA.....

See the FH website Support Overview tab https://www.family-historian.co.uk/supp ... t-overview under Support Tickets which leads to http://support.calico-pie.com/open.php

The FHUG KB Calico Pie page under Problem Reporting and Support Centre Ticket System leads to the same web page.

There are many ways, which is intended to be helpful but ends up being confusing. The easiest to remember, since you'll be in FH when you need to report a bug...

FH - HELP - Technical Support
Lists the sources you might want to go to, the LAST thing, at the very bottom of the page, is the link to Support Tickets where you open a ticket that goes directly to the folks at CP.

Yes, that Help option links directly to the Support Overview page I mentioned.

Thanks for the help. Ticket written.

I have also started a file/reminder to myself on how to write a ticket - and the ticket number!

Linda, you should get a series of Emails from CP Support each with the ticket number.
The first Email also provides a link URL to the support ticket entry.
I keep those Emails in a dedicated folder as an index to the support tickets.
